Nerf Spectre REV-5 - Review!

The Nerf Spectre REV-5!

The Nerf Spectre is a spring plunger blaster with a 5-dart rotating barrel. The blaster is primed via its top priming handle (similar to a Nerf Maverick).

The barrel rotates during the priming action (not the trigger pull), this feature helps to reduce the chances of jams occurring.

It comes with a front barrel attachment and a folding shoulder stock. Both of these attachments are also compatible with other N-Strike blasters too, and vice versa.

The package includes 5 Sonic foam darts. Average range is around 25-30ft.

  1. so it`s preety much a re-packaged maverick with more innecessary accessories?

  2. Seems sort of ironic to sell both sonic darts and a silencer with it.
Also, how quiet is it? does the barrel attachment help? Can it be used for hardcore stealth missions?
It's certainly small enough for some decent stealth...

    ReplyDelete
  3. Morgan,

I've just uploaded a demo and test fire video on the Spectre, you can check that out.

The barrel attachment is just a hollow plastic tube. Its a faux barrel, there are no "silencing" properties in it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. does the barrel fit in the mesh pocket of the tactical vest?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hmmm... Looks like the cylinder rotates on being cocked instead of the really loose trigger-driven rotation on a Maverick. Hopefully that means it won't misalign as often.

And it is kind of ironic to include sonic darts with the only Nerf gun to have a cosmetic silencer attachment.

I like the fact that it's that much slimmer than the rather chunky Maverick.

I reckon this will end up being the favoured base for steampunk costume pieces in the future. ;)

  6. Nice work.. this is one blaster that I've been wanting to get my hands on but living in Australia.. it's just not gonna happen for a while:( Love the pics though, I guess I can just live vicariously through you!!

ps SGNerf's pretty much the premier nerf blog on the net as far as I'm concerned; I've used a few of your images but have always referenced back to you.

    1. You probably already know this but Target Australia has 40% off all nerf at the moment, the Spectre is $11, go!

  7. It's only a review if you tell us what you think about it. Is it worth our money? Is it just a 5 barreled Maverick?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hey, looks like they finally made a hollow barrel attachment... does that mean that this barrel does not reduce range?

    ReplyDelete
  9. It looks like the barrel is leaning downward.

    ReplyDelete
  10. SG Nerf,

How does this fit in to the grab-it gadget pack holster? (The Maverick is a little bit too thick)

Also, does the barrel shake and twist when the gun is turned quickly?

In addition, is there a major weight difference from the Maverick?

  12. It seems to be a maverick integrated with a recon and other characteristics

    ReplyDelete
  13. @brotherastartes
it looks like the spectre eliminates the problem with the maverick where the cylinder doesn't align with the barrel leading to misfires.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Smiley dude 88,

Yes, the front barrel attachment can fit into the Nerf tactical vest's side mesh pocket.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Pocket. Esq.,

    Thanks for the cool feedback!

You have a very nice Nerf blog site there too. Keep up the great work! :)

  16. Animatroy,

My reviews are usually written in an impartial style and are mainly to share facts on the blasters. Its up to readers to decide if it suits them.

Personally, i like the Spectre, aside from its smaller 5-dart barrel, it has enough new features to be an improvement over the Maverick.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Keegan McCormick,

Well, the front barel attachment is abit shorter than the other N-Strike barrel attachments available so far, and the barrel internal diameter is slightly wider to accommodate the larger tips of the Sonic foam darts.

So i guess it lessens the effect of a loss of range (due to friction or the foam darts bumping against the barrel walls) when its used.

    ReplyDelete
  18. John,

I've tested it with the Grab-It pack and the slimmer width of the Spectre does allow it to fit better than the Maverick.

I didn't notice much twisting when the barrel is rotated, perhaps 'cos the Spectre's barrel is smaller than in the Maverick.

Not much difference in weight either, both the Spectre and Maverick seem to weigh around the same.

For your forum, perhaps you can start by getting those in your area who may be keen on Nerf to join up. Add in a trading section and a news section too. If there are enough forum activities and contributing members, it'll grow eventually.

  19. Thanks! This is the best blog ever!

  20. SG Nerf,
    BTW, I don't have a forum, that's a different commenter.

  21. I saw a guy say this on Nerf's facebook page, and was wondering what you thought of it. Do you think that maybe (intentional or not) the 5-dart cylinder's pentagon shape would take longer to wear down into a circle than the Maverick's 6-dart cylinder? Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shadesbane43,

Perhaps... though i think if a Maverick's rotating spool actually wears out to a circle, then that blaster must be going through some really heavy-duty usage! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was also wondering about the turret seal. Is it better than the Mav? And could you use the spring-in-front mod in order to improve it, like in the Mav?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Shadesbane43,

From what i can see, the turret seal seems to be similiar to a Maverick and it looks like the small spring mod for the turret might work to improve the seal like in the Maverick.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So where can I get one in Singapore?

    ReplyDelete
  26. nicholas,

The Nerf Spectre is now available at Toys R Us and most major dept stores in Singapore.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hello SG Nerf,
Do u recommend the Alpha trouper or the spectre?

    ReplyDelete
  28. @SGNerf

i thought this gun was only available at walmarts...

    ReplyDelete
  29. SG,

Do you have an alpha trooper yet? I know that in the U.S. they are available at target now, but I'm kinda bummed that the spectre isn't out yet here.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jason,

Both the Alpha Trooper and Spectre have different functions.

Go for the Alpha Trooper if you want more ammo capacity and slam fire capability.

Get the Spectre if you want a compact blaster that can be holstered like a sidearm.

    ReplyDelete
  31. bob,

Nerf blaster distribution is different in Singapore.

Blaster models that might be store "excusive" in the USA could instead be available in all major dept stores in Singapore.

    ReplyDelete
  32. NanoStriker,

I've tested the Alpha Trooper, though it is still not officially available in Singapore stores yet.

I'll definitely do a full review on it once i get a proper boxed set.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Knowing my prowess with the maverick, this will be my favorite gun! With a tactical rail that isn't on the slide and stock and barrel extensions, this will ROCK! I can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  34. do you buy it in taobao.com?how much was it?if you said yes, does it ship to indonesia?

  35. Alvin Hardy,

    ReplyDelete
  37. malee_necromancer,

No news of the Alpha Trooper's availability in Singapore yet.

I'll definitely update the site if it does appear in stores locally.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

Sorry, no idea of the Nerf Spectre availability in Australia. Perhaps you can check with the chaps at OzNerf forum.

  40. SG, are Nerf guns sold at Changi airport, by any chance?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Pan Dan,

I've not spotted any Nerf blasters available at the shops in Changi Airport... your best option is to get the Nerf blasters at the major dept stores along Orchard Road.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Any chance I can see a picture of the longshot with this barrel attachment?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Zack,

Well, at this moment, Nerf Alpha Troopers are not available in Singapore yet, so i have none to review. Anyone kind enough to send me a set? :)

Yup, i've had a look at your blog site, looks good... but do try to post more reviews of your own blasters, readers will want to see your photos and information instead of re-posts from other sites.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Could you please add a link of my brazilian blog in your blog? If you do that i can add a link off your blog in my blog, so, what do you think about it?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gabriel e Marco,

Just post more useful information and your own reviews on your blog.

Readers want to see your own reviews, not just info copied from other sites.

Btw... if you use other people's site photos (i see you used some of mine), please credit the source by putting the site link where you got the photos from.

  50. I'm wondering will a standard recon barrel fit on this and will it work well still. I held my Recon barrel on the end of my maverick and the dart barely squeezed itself out.

    ReplyDelete
  51. colin b,

Yes, N-Strike front barrel attachments can be mounted on the Nerf Spectre.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Great Review Sg Nerf! :)

I think this might replace my Maverick! Looks Awesome!!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  53. Could you possibly take a picture from the top of the stock & silencer attached?
I would like to see the alignment of the stock, with its bent rod supports and all

    ReplyDelete
  54. Spectre? or Deploy?

    I really can't choose.
Can you give me a description on the two guns? (eg. What happens to the gun overtime? Does it get weaker?

I prefer Long Ranged blasters, basically Stealthy, and not too much of a giveaway. I like to not be noticed, and I also like being accurate. Pls. tell me which gun is more compatible for me? tnx.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Iigguuee,

Since you didn't mention ammo capacity and both the Spectre and Deploy have around the similiar range anyways, and you prefer something more compact and "stealthy"... it looks like you would do well with a Spectre.

    ReplyDelete
  56. When Will This Be Out In The U.S.?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Is it compatible with streamline dart? Thanks SG.

    ReplyDelete
  58. youknowwho,

Yes, it can fire streamline darts too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. SG Nerf,
Would you recommend the Spectre to the Barricade?
    John

    ReplyDelete
  60. Benjamin,

That'll just depend on whether you want a single-shot manual primed spring plunger blaster... or a semi-auto flywheel blaster.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hi there. love the blog It really is the best source for accurate clear photos and reviews. Thank you for your service. I have one question. When the heck is it coming out in the U.S.? I can't even find one for sale on Amazon.com, it's ridiculous! Any inside info?

    ReplyDelete
  62. SG Nerf is the nerf spectre rev-5 going to come out in the clear series?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Dylan,

For the USA market, the Nerf Spectre is a Walmart Exclusive model... therefore you should check at the Walmart stores near your area.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Da Nerf Dude,

So far, i've not heard of any announcement of any clear series version of the Spectre.

    ReplyDelete
  65. hey im from the US. I just checked if there were any spectres in stock at walmart.com. Are they only at stores and not online? Do you have a US release date for the spectre?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Sam,

Nerf Spectres have been spotted at Walmart stores in the USA. I guess its best to check at the stores as they may not be listed online yet.

    ReplyDelete
  67. ok that would make sense. I'll just keep on checking my local walmart. Hopefully they'll also put it in stock at target, which is where I usually buy all my nerf guns. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. The Spectre rev-5 is a very awesome gun!The awesome thing is a very close relation ship with the desighn of the nerf Maverick rev-6.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The weird thing about the Nerf Spectre rev-5 is it's like a mixture of two Nerf guns the extension barrel is straight like the Recon CS-6 and with no attachments it and looks like a Nerf Maverick rev-6 and the Recon CS-6 is not foldable but the Spectre rev-5 shoulder stock is but it does look like the Recon CS-6 shoulder stock.

    ReplyDelete
  70. SG Nerf when will the Nerf spectre rev-5 come out to the US?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Da Nerf Dude,

The Nerf Spectre has already been spotted at dept stores in the States.

Check the NerfHaven forum "Nerf Product Awareness System" thread for updates and info.

    ReplyDelete
  72. hi Sgnerf,

when you use the blaster with just the barrel is the blaster front heavy?

    thanks
    Dgenx101

    ReplyDelete
  73. Dgenx101,

The Spectre's front barrel attachment is just a hollow shell of plastic so it's not really that front heavy when attached.

    ReplyDelete
  74. SG Nerf today I was in the us looking for the spectre but I never found it at my local Walmart and Target which places in the US is the Spectre rev-5 in?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Da Nerf Dude,

If you are not aware by now, i am situated in Singapore.

I have no idea of specific stores where you can find blasters in the USA.

You should check at the Nerf forums like NerfHaven which are based in the States to find out which stores the blasters have been spotted at.

Or just ask the staff at the stores you visited to find out about stock availability.

    ReplyDelete
  76. So is the spectre compatible with the longstrike barrel?

    ReplyDelete
  77. You're rather camera shy, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  78. can you put me in your blog list please? of so thanks

    http://nerfcammando.blogspot.com

    ReplyDelete
  79. zac,

Well, i guess i'm not a "celebrity" Nerf youtuber who feels the need to post videos with my face in it and yabbering 10+ minutes on and on about how to attach a scope or a shoulder stock. :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. What does the deploy look like with the barrel attachment?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hey SG Nerf, is there much difference between the Maverick and the Spectre? If so, can you list it out? Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Nerf Meagafan,

They both share the same basic firing design, but there are a few small differences:

    Nerf Maverick REV-6
    - 6-dart barrel
    - Barrel auto-rotates on trigger pull (higher chance of jamming)
    - Wider profile
    - Cannot fit N-Strike front barrels or shoulder stocks

    Nerf Spectre REV-5
    - 5-dart barrel
    - Barrel auto-rotates on priming pull (less chance of jamming)
    - Narrower profile
    - Can fit N-Strike front barrels or shoulder stocks

    ReplyDelete
  83. does the longshot pistol fit on where the silencer fits

    ReplyDelete
  84. the barrel is not a silencer!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Jayden,

    Yes, it's possible to fit.

    ReplyDelete
  86. SG Nerf,
What do you prefer, the recon or spectre?

    ReplyDelete
  87. wafi,

Blaster preference depends on individual gameplay style, i prefer more ammo capacity so for me the Recon offers alot more choices in the form of N-Strike ammo clip and magazine compatibility.

The Spectre is limited in ammo capacity, but its compact and very suitable as a sidearm though.

    ReplyDelete
  88. is the spectre better than the maverick? Cause i have a deploy as a primary weapon, if the spectre is better i might sell my maverick to my friend and buy the specte

    ReplyDelete
  89. wafi,

If compared to the Maverick, i'd say the Spectre definitely offers a few noticeable improvements, it doesn't jam as much due its "barrel rotation on priming" feature, and it has a slimmer width which makes it easier to holster.

The only minus point is you have to make do with one less foam dart in the ammo capacity.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Yea I like it looks less likely to break compared to the maverick, but I don't really think the attachments are worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Does this use a direct or reverse plunger system?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Michael,

The Nerf Spectre uses a reverse plunger system.

Please refer to the Nerf Spectre Internals Guide here:

    http://modworks.blogspot.com/2010/08/nerf-spectre-internals-guide.html

    ReplyDelete
  93. R they gonna make a semi automatic any time soon?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Samza,

    A semi-auto Nerf Spectre? No idea. :)

You could just get the Nerf Barricade instead though, thats a semi-auto blaster.

    ReplyDelete
  95. i thought it was automatic
but i guess the barricade is pretty cool

    ReplyDelete
  96. SG Nerf,

I was wondering, is using the Maverick and the Spectre Rev-5 a good idea? Im a new nerfer and these are my first two guns, im getting them for Christmas. If you could also provide any info for a new nerfer I would be greatly appreciative, thanks!

P.S. The spectre is going to be my main weapon, and the Maverick as a sidearm...

    ReplyDelete
  97. Phillip,

Its a rather odd choice to use 2 blasters that have almost the same functions.

Perhaps you could consider getting a different blaster, like the Nerf Stampede, which would offer other features for a more effective combination.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Should I get rid of the Maverick then? I think it would be a good combo to have a sniper and an offensive machine gun.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Phillip,

Well, you can just customize your load-out... though i can't see how a Spectre could be considered a "sniper", its more of a pistol sidearm.

    ReplyDelete
  100. SG Nerf,

Another question, does the silencer do anything? I know it doesnt silence but does it increase range or anything else?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Phillip,

The front barrel attachment is for show purposes, its a prop piece.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Is the stock as flimsy and weak as the Recon's? If so, I may just use the stock from the Raider. Do you have any preferences in the shoulder stock area?

    ReplyDelete
  103. elitebuster,

The Spectre's folding shoulder stock is actually even more flexible then the Recon shoulder stock.

Yes, the Raider shoulder stock can be used on the Spectre too. It's definitely a more sturdy shoulder stock to use.

    ReplyDelete
  104. i bought it its really good attach the longshot barrel for some extra fire power and use the sonic darts in the shotgun like barrel and it beasts its range extendes by 20% (gonna test it with the suction darts next)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Woah woah woah... In the 12th picture, I didn't no hasbro made a holo sight...

    ReplyDelete
  108. annkin,

The Nerf blasters i review are from local dept stores in Singapore, you just have to shop around for them.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hi nerfsg,
I can't decide whether i should get the spectre or the deploy. Can u pls tell me the pros and cons of each gun to help me decide? pls?

    ReplyDelete
  110. imnewhere,

Read both reviews, it'll give you an idea of how each of them work.

Spectre is compact but only has 5-dart ammo capacity.

Deploy is larger in size but can use N-Strike clips (for more ammo capacity).

    ReplyDelete
  111. Does anyone know when the spectre will be in stores in australia cause i really want one and all what they sell now are stampedes wich is annoying cause most people got one

    ReplyDelete
  112. NERFKID05
I have seen the spectre in target which is awesome.
we don't have walmarts in AUS so its good that they released it in aus.
but if you want a really good gun get the Alpha trooper
    it OWNS.

    ReplyDelete
  113. How many grams is just the gun itself?

    ReplyDelete
  114. axolotl22,

Around 400 grams, similar to the Nerf Maverick.

    ReplyDelete
  115. how stable is da stock
also wihich plunger is the best for modding and which guns have it

    ReplyDelete
  116. Samza,

The stock is abit flexible due to the thinner structure and hinged attachment point, but its usable in most situations.

The best Nerf blaster plunger for modding is found in the Nerf Longshot, it has a direct plunger design with large air volume (3-4 times larger than reverse plunger systems).

    ReplyDelete
  117. great thanx 4 the info
also what plunger does the Alpha trooper have and is it good for modding

    ReplyDelete
  118. Samza,

The Alpha Trooper uses a reverse plunger system, similar to the Raider, Recon, Deploy, Longstrike etc.

You can see its blaster internals and comparisons here:

    http://modworks.blogspot.com/2010/08/nerf-spectre-internals-guide.html

    ReplyDelete
  119. would you recommend the barrel break, the spectre or the barricade?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Ben,

The Barrel Break mainly looks cool for the break-action "style", the Spectre is good for its bundled attachments (which can also fit other compatible N-Strike blasters)... but for actual Nerf games, the Barricade will be more effective overall with its semi-auto firing feature.

    ReplyDelete
  121. where did u get the red dot sight attachment?!
i cant find it anywhere in australia

    ReplyDelete
  122. Evangel,

I got my Nerf Pinpoint Sights from dept stores in Johor Bahru (Malaysia), but that was way back in 2009, and they are not even available in Singapore either.

You can read a review of it here:

    http://sgnerf.blogspot.com/2009/09/nerf-pinpoint-sight-review.html

I've not seen them in stores since though, so i guess they are quite rare nowadays.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I have one and it works well but if u are in a fight you will not win if you have the spectre and your enemy has a switch shot. If you mod the top of a whistler dart it will go a lot farther u might get somewhere and the barrel does silence little 19$ at wal-mart

    ReplyDelete
  124. If the Spectre fires Whistlers/Sonic Whistlers, will the darts fit in a barrel extension meant for a streamline-dart blaster? For example, the Recon barrel can fit on the spectre, but can the Spectre still fire it's larger darts after the smaller-diameter barrel is on?

Sorry if it doesn't really make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Jessen L.

I've tested and they still work, the various N-Strike front barrel extensions have internal diameters wide enough to still allow those foam darts to fire through.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Hey sg nerf it's me again. This time I was wondering if you know how much this costs in the u.k. Two of my frinds have the maverik so I might sell mine and buy a spectre.

    ReplyDelete
  127. 12 dan 12,

I'm not familiar with the stock availability or prices of Nerf blasters in the UK (i'm in Singapore), you'll just have to check directly with the dept stores around your area. :)

    ReplyDelete
  128. It's ok, I can always use amazon.co.uk to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Hi sg nerf , wanna ask where can we find rev-5 now in sg or do u have any spare set ? Looking for this gun very long n I did saw tis on oversea website but not sure can I bought it online n send to sg ... Pls give advice

    ReplyDelete
  130. Desmond19,

Nerf Spectres have been sold out in Singapore for quite a while, and i don't have any spare sets either.

I guess nowadays you'll just have to order them from overseas or online stores.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Ic.. Just to COnfirm I can order online n import in ?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Desmond19,

Well, that's what most local nerfers do nowadays since there is no more stock locally.

Note that if the overseas stores don't ship internationally, then you'll have to use a 3rd-party shipper to ship it to Singapore separately.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Can the stampede's blast shield attach to this?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Furygun81,

Yes, the Stampede blast shield can also be attached to the Spectre. :)

That's the Nerf Pinpoint Sight, they were available in stores back in 2009. You can check out my review of it here:

  138. Hi SG! Is it possible to drill into the back of the plunger that the spring sits on? This would effectively increase the size of the plunger and provide more air and therefore more power. Do you think this is feasible?

    1. T da B,

I replied to your same question posted at the Spectre Internals Guide, but i'll just re-post my answer here...

I forgot if that part is already hollow or not (already traded away my Spectres), but i guess if it isn't its possible to drill into it to create more space... though its more of additional deadspace than actual effective air volume, because the plunger still has the same draw and doesn't compress that section of air so it'll actually reduce the effective pressure in the plunger.

  139. Dear SGNerf,
would u recommend the spectre or the longstrike?

    1. Anonymous,

Depends in the usage, the Spectre is more suitable as a sidearm, while the Longstrike is more suitable as a main blaster.

  140. Hey, SG.

Which would be the best for my secondary blaster, Barrel Break or spectre?

and can i use the new elite darts for spectre? :)

    1. Anonymous,

I'd go for the Spectre, it's much more compact than the Barrel Break, easier to carry as a secondary blaster.

Yes, Elite foam darts can be used in the Spectre too.

    2. I think Im going to get both. For secondary and for collection. Thanks for the help SG. :)

P/s : Im new with this nerf thing. Thanks again, SG :)

Most likely one or more of the parts is damaged or worn out, you'll have to open it up to check and troubleshoot the problem... or just buy a new one and save all the hassle. :)

    2. SG Nerf,
I think I found the problem, but thank you for replying anyway. I think only the whistler darts that were with the spectre is usable, because I thought some other oneswere mine and I tried them, but they were too loose and kept falling out.
P.S. They were my brother's darts.

The Nerf N-Strike Spectre was recently re-stocked at local major dept stores (ie. Toys R Us, Metro, OG etc), retailing at SGD$36.90.

    1. Shane Lim,

Nope, no Whiteout Series Spectre was ever in production.

There were some mock-up box photos of it posted online, but it was never produced.

  144. Hi SG Nerf

Will a Alpha Trooper spring fit the Spectre?

    Cheers

    1. JimiPop,

The Spectre's plunger is smaller so the springs are probably of different sizing, thus unlikely to fit.

You got a faulty unit, just exchange it at the store for a new working set.

    1. Sean Lim,

Just check at any of the major dept stores in Singapore, like Toys R Us, Metro, OG etc... note that the yellow N-Strike version has been phased out and replaced by the new blue Elite version since mid-2013.

    2. Ahh thats great because all the ones my friend has are yellow and i cant even find a blue one near around the stores like lot 1. Thanks alot

  147. Mine has the same problem!

The Spectre is notorious for turret jam. As mentioned by Cory, it's the rotation mechanisms. Try opening it & checking the gears, contact points as well as lubricating it.

I notice that when loading the turret back into the blaster, the hexagon rotating contact point needs to be fully seated - by gentle rocking with the turret until you feel a solid "click". This way it does minimize jams (it will still happen) & provided the internal rotation mechanisms are okay, it's really just a poor design & the later models like Strongarm etc use a different type of mechanism.

Still, the Spectre is a sleek design blaster & this manual adjustment helps (though not good for Nerf wars!).
