Nerf Stampede ECS - Review!

Clear the way for the Nerf Stampede ECS!

The Nerf Stampede ECS is a fully motorized spring-powered direct plunger blaster. The blaster requires 6 x D Batteries to power its motor.

Its firing system is fully motorized, there is no manual priming mechanism (without any batteries, it cannot fire). The bolt will complete a full firing cycle everytime before coming to a stop in the breech open position, therefore clips can be loaded and unloaded anytime.

The Stampede can fire in full auto or in bursts, depending on the duration of trigger pulls. Firing single shots at a time can also be done by simply pulling the trigger briefly and letting go, the firing mechanism will fire a shot, return back to the breech open position and stop. Its all in the timing of the trigger pulls.

Any jams that occur can be cleared via the sliding access hatch positioned just above the bolt.

The Stampede has 6 tactical rails which are compatible with most N-Strike blaster accessories. It is compatible with the new 18-dart clips, as well as the 6-dart clips and 35-dart drum magazines.

The complete boxed package comes with 3 x 18-dart clips, 1 x 6-dart clip and 60 streamline darts.

The blaster is equipped with a tactical rail mounted Pop-Out Bipod which can be used as a conventional vertical foregrip, or with the press of a button, deploy 2 hidden legs to convert itself into a bipod for support on surfaces.

It also comes packaged with a tactical rail mounted Blast Shield, this shield can be mounted and dismounted easily with a pinch-lock system.

The Stampede's stock rate-of-fire (RoF) is around 180 rounds-per-minute (RPM). Average stock range is around 25-30ft.

Available at Toys R Us and most major dept stores in Singapore. Retail Price: SGD$109.90.

  1. Thanks for posting a second review and pics of the extended mags on the other guns, I'm waiting for my Stampede to ship so it's good to have a look.

  2. Can you post a picture of the Longshot and longstrike with the 18 dart long clips? And can you post a pic of the Stampede with the Alpha Troopers drum mag?

  3. This gun is awesome! Picked it up the other day and it is a lot of fun. I'm almost afraid to open it in case I mess it up (55 bucks isn't a simple repurchase, especially now when it'll be in high demand).

  4. "Both the Pop-Out Bipod and Blast Shield can be mounted on any Nerf blaster with tactical rails too."

Sorry, but you've got to change this. The shield doesn't go on the Vulcan or Furyfire at all, and you cannot use it with the Maverick or Raider because it gets in the way. These are just examples of things it doesn't work on.

Also, it would be very nice if you could take a picture of the shield on a Nitefinder and Deploy. I would do this, but my cameras broken. *very sad*

    ReplyDelete
  5. burntcustard,

Haha... yeah, i know what you mean. Thanks for pointing that bit out to me.

Although the Blast Shield could be attached to any tactical rail, whether it actually functions properly or looks good is another matter altogether. :)

Okay, i'll just omit that statement and let readers share their specific experience in using the Blast Shield on other blasters.

  6. Is the small hole in the rear of the carry handle a sight of some sort?

    ReplyDelete
  7. P13c30fch33s3,

Yes, its a hollow tube section that lines up with the foresight tip at the front of the barrel, to form a sort of ironsight.

Similiar to the sight on the Nerf Deploy too.

  9. SG Nerf,
I got a stampede yesterday and it says "Stampede ECS 50". I was wondering why they still sell the out of date versions. Also, will they be worth any thing (like the yellow LS)?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Benjamin,

Thats interesting... take a photo of that Stampede and post it up, i'm sure enthusiasts and collectors would also be keen to see that there are such versions actually in circulation too. :)

  11. Is the 'sight' on the Stampede any good?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Does the tube sight actually see under the shield, or not?

    ReplyDelete
  13. htrfghg,

The "sight" is basically a hollow tube lined up with the foresight tip. I guess its as useful how the user aims it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Xavier,

When the Blast Shield is mounted, the foresight tip is blocked, so the "sight" can't be used.

  17. This is in response to your mod guide of the Nerf Stampede: what would work best in place of the anit-slip pads because i can not seem to find them. also, i am curious as to how you gauge your springs. would a 6kg be like a stock nitefinder? please help. i can assembling all the parts to accomplish this feat. your blog is fantastic and i wish you a long and healthy modding life

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nathaniel,

Use soft padding that can compress easily and are designed to absorb impact. Try to find similiar soft bumper padding commonly used for furniture and cupboard doors.

The aftermarket springs i use all come with detailed load specifications from the spring manufacturers i source them from.

But i don't have any actual load specifications on the stock Nite Finder spring though, i can only guess based on comparisions tests that its probably a 2-3 kg spring.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The stampede I just got jammed a few times with the raider clip because the jam door slid open, but I'm sure the feature that stops it from firing with the jam door open can be removed like on the recon.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Davis,

Looks like your particular Stampede unit's top access hatch probably has a loose catch.

Try to see if you can make the access hatch catch more secure.

The access hatch basically presses down a pressure switch at the front to close the circuit, so if you find that you still can't solve the access hatch catch issue, then simply push a small folded piece of paper onto the switch to keep the ciruit closed in that section.

Note that you'll have to be alot more careful if the Stampede is operated with a loose or open access hatch with the pressure switch pressed down, users who accidently stick their fingers into the bolt area when its firing can get injured.

    ReplyDelete
  21. SG Nerf,
Is it as simple to bypass the Stampede's pressure switch as it is on the Vulcan?
I have no worries about firing it with the hatch open, I have a Recon with the jam door and trigger lock removed, so I've learned not to stick anything in it's jam door.

And if anyone's wondering, the shield doesn't fit on the Firefly and is uncomfortable on the Scout, however it fits well upside down on the Switch Shot, you can actually aim with it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Davis,

There are many pressure switches in the Stampede which keep its circuit open and stops it from firing if clips or access hatches are not in place.

To be able to operate the Stampede without the access hatch, simply remove the access hatch piece and wedge a folded piece of paper into the pressure switch located at the front right hand corner where the access hatch slides into.

Note that using a Stampede without the access hatch requires more care than using a Recon without the access hatch.

The Recon bolt is manually chambered, so even if the bolt clips fingers it can still be stopped easily.

The Stampede uses a repeating motorized action which would continue firing even if fingers are caught in the bolt area, potentially causing injury to fingers, so be very careful when clearing jams and especially when its being used by young children or new users.

  23. What's wrong with Nerf? They sent Stampedes to my local Mart and they still haven't sent the Firefly which has been released for like 2 years!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nerf Meagafan,

The Nerf Firefly was available in M'sia dept stores last year, but they have since been sold out.

  27. can suction darts be used for the 18-dart clip?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Adil,

Nope... Nerf N-Strike clips are only compatible with streamline foam darts.

    ReplyDelete
  29. where did you get the battery converters?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Adam,

Battery converters can be found at electronics supply stores.

You can check out this useful information link on batteries and related equipment over at the NerfSG forum:

  31. Is this gun better or is the raider better?

    ReplyDelete
  32. rubesh's nerf,

The Stampede is a motorised full-auto blaster, that gives it an obvious advantage over the manual pump action system on the Raider.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi, i recently bought the stampede and I found your guide; I'm about to participate in my school's HvZ game and I'd really like my gun to similar to the ones you showed in your videos. So far I've bought the felt pads and O-rings. My local Radioshack didn't have any "high(er)" voltage AA's or D's and wiring multiple 4AA->D holders seemed complicated (in their words) so instead I bought 2 9V batteries and some connectors. In theory, if i connected them in a series, this should give me a yield of 18V right? Also, I went to 3 local hardware stores and none of them seemed to have the type of springs used in Nerf guns. Can I simply add a Nitefinder spring to the stock spring? I remember being able to do this in the Longshot but I don't know if it'll work as well. Also, are there ramifications to using 18V's?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ed,

Although the 9V batteries could be used to power a Stampede, and you could wire 2 in a series to get 18V, they have very low mAh capacity (how long a battery can provide power)... usually only around 500+ mAh.

Just for comparison, a typical AA Alkaline battery has around 2,000-3000 mAh and a D battery has around 20,000 mAh.

So if you use 9V batteries, expect to keep purchasing many sets as they would tend to run out pretty quickly.

Try to source for alternative battery sources, its best to use rechargeable batteries for cost efficiency.

For springs, you could try adding a Nite Finder spring into the plunger, though whether it has enough space for more than 1 spring would require further mods.

If you're interested, i currently have Stampede Mod Upgrade Kits (Aftermarket springs + O-rings) available at my sales thread at the NerfSG forum (www.nerfsg.com) trading section, check it out if you're keen on a set.

As for voltage feed, i've found 18V okay for usage in a Stampede, though how well it runs will depend on your blaster and the foam darts used. The higher the RoF the less forgiving it becomes when chambering bent or worn out foam darts.

For more consistent firing and no jams, i've found the optimal setup when running my stock Stampedes at 14-15V or my modded Stampedes at 16-17V with 9kg load aftermarket springs (heavier springs help to slow down the RoF slightly too).

    ReplyDelete
  35. darn...so if 20,000mAh will power the motor for about 700+shots...the 18v 500mAh will be enough for a 18clip...=.=;; I decided to order the Trustfire 14500 3.7V Lithium batteries that you use and I'll hit up a local Radioshack for the 4AA converter. I haven't looked at your aftermarket spring and O-ring set yet but maybe I'll purchase one. How much is it?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ed,

Actually, good quality D-size Alkaline batteries can power stock Stampedes to fire even more clips, but they are heavy and bulky. In addition, most normal Alkaline batteries may not have high enough discharge rates to power modded Stampedes.

Getting Li-Ion rechargeables with high voltage and high discharge rates like TrustFires are the ideal setup for modded Stampedes.

Check my "Stampede Mod Upgrade Kit" sales thread at the NerfSG forum trading section, more info there on the upgrade kit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sg Nerf,
I'm thinking about buying either the Stampede or the Vulcan.

They both have similar features, such as how many rounds per minutes, but which one would you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  38. The gun looks amazing! Thanks for the review! However, I would like to make a small request: Do you know about the packages the sell two recon 6 dart clips and a clip connector to fit them together? Like in this photo: http://www.hasbrotoyshop.com/nerf-n-strike-flip-clip?BR=582&SBR=764&ST=SO&PG=1
Could you please upload a picture of two 18 dart clips fitted together with the flip clip connector in the Stampede please?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jake,

    ReplyDelete
  40. .....the stampede doesn't look cool although the other stuff of it rock.............

    ReplyDelete
  41. Trevor,

Well, unfortunately i don't have a flip clip connector.

I guess you could get a set and just try it out. :)

  42. Nice Stampede, but can I know where do you get the Pinpoint sight you got there? It looks nice but I don't think it is available in Singapore, because I couldn't find it. Did you order it online?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ashley,

The Nerf Pinpoint Sight is not available in local stores.

They have been spotted at dept stores in M'sia but i'm not sure if they are still available there anymore.

The other option is to order from overseas or online sites.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Could you provide some info on Battery life with an unmodded Stampede, please. I think ModWorks only has modded.

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  45. James1431997,

Battery life for stock Stampedes would largely depend on the quality of the batteries you are using.

I've seen stock Stampedes with good quality D-sized batteries (from major battery brands) firing more than 100+ clips before requiring a battery change.

On the other hand, i've seen stock Stampedes with low quality D-size batteries (3rd party brands or cheap knock-offs) only firing a few clips before running out of power.

Therefore, do use good quality batteries to power your stock Stampedes. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sg Nerf,

How accurate is the stampede using stock darts?

    ReplyDelete
  47. niwde,

Well, stock streamline darts are inherently unbalanced so their accuracy isn't consistent, only usable for short range targets.

For increased accuracy and consistency, most modders prefer to use custom calibrated foam darts instead.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh. okay thanks.

However, I seem to have a problem.
After removing the AR my darts seem to be more inconsistent. Some could fire up to 40+ feet and some would only be at 20 feet. Even at close range, my darts seem to just go downwards.

So i was wondering whether anyone else has this issue. My spring is stock and im using unmodded darts. Perhaps i need a stronger spring?

sorry for writing so much. Haha.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am getting a stampede realy soon, but hwo much would it cost to mod it, spring replacement e.t.c.?

    ReplyDelete
  50. niwde,

Like i mentioned, stock streamline darts are very inconsistent.

They are not accurate when fired from stock blasters and the inaccuracy and shot consistency gets worst in modded blasters.

You need to use custom calibrated foam darts that have a consistent dart seal and better weight balance.

    ReplyDelete
  51. wanna-be,

It depends on the materials you plan to use.

If you are keen, i currently have Stampede Mod Upgrade Kits available at the NerfSG forum trading section:

    ReplyDelete
  53. wanna-be,

It depends on where you are situated and what items you require.

Send me a PM at the forum to enquire.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi. Thanks for the great review. I brought a Stampede as a result and am really impressed with it. Anyway, I'm going to use it most of this weekend at a war, and won't be able to get hold of battery replacements if they die on me. I'm using cheapish Batteries, and was wondering how to work out how long they last. Do you know the current draw of a stock Stampede, and how to find out how long batteries last?

    Thanks in Advance,
    James1431997

    ReplyDelete
  55. James1431997,

From my tests, the average current draw on a stock Stampede is around 1.2-1.4A when its firing in full-auto.

The number of clips you can fire from one set of batteries would really depend on the mAh capacity quality of the batteries.

As i mentioned in earlier comments...

"I've seen stock Stampedes with good quality D-sized batteries (from major battery brands) firing more than 100+ clips before requiring a battery change.

On the other hand, i've seen stock Stampedes with low quality D-size batteries (3rd party brands or cheap knock-offs) only firing a few clips before running out of power.

Therefore, do use good quality batteries to power your stock Stampedes. :)"

    ReplyDelete
  56. I searched for the writing on the battery (mn130 lr20) and the Duracel website came up, saying it should last 5 hours, but the only branding on the battery is Morrisons, where I brought it from. Would the information be accurate?

    Thanks for this.

    ReplyDelete
  57. James1431997,

Last 5 hours? Based on what kind of usage and in which devices?

In addition, those numbers on your batteries are just general identification codes for battery types.

Imho, there are so many variables that it's difficult to accurately calculate or even estimate how long a certain battery can last in a particular device unless you have the all the exact specifications of all the components and specific testing equipment.

The simplest way to test (which most people do) is to just use one set of the particular battery type and brand in the device and record how long they can last based on average usage.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Does the Stampede support SDL darts?

    ReplyDelete
  59. nikhilk,

You'll just need to convert the SDL darts to become N-Strike clip system compatible, then they will be able to be fired from Nerf Stampedes... and the accuracy with those foams darts when properly converted are excellent, i use them for most of my blasters. :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Is the conversion a mod of some sorts? Is it is, would it be available at mod works?

    ReplyDelete
  61. This thing was made for the round magazine man.

Thanks for the review! And, out of your experiments, have you found if this shield looks good on any other gun? I was thinking about trying to put it on my Spectre, but I haven't bought the big gun yet.

    ReplyDelete
  62. nikhilk,

You can read this SDL dart conversion guide at the NerfSG forum:

    http://nerfsg.freeforums.org/step-by-step-on-how-to-construct-recon-ls-compatible-ammo-t593.html

    ReplyDelete
  63. JerreyRough,

Well, whether the blast shield looks good (or is practical) on other blasters is up to personal preference.

It can help to block shots to the head during gameplay, quite useful if you are firing from a defensive position (ie. low wall or blockade) to get maximum coverage.... but your view would tend to be rather obstructed though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi SgNerf, I posted a while ago about modding my stampede. Good news is that I followed your mod and it worked perfectly fine for a few weeks but last night it just stopped working. i pulled the trigger and as it shot the last dart it made a sort of "powering-down" noise. I don't think its a power issue because I had charged the batteries a week ago and I dont use my blaster that often (a few clips over a week?) Have you run into this problem before?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Ed,

In such cases, the first thing to check is the connections between all the batteries and the battery sled.

Even if all the batteries look like they are in contact with each other, there is a possibilty there is a short or break amongst them. The best way to test the circuit is with a multimeter, try to get one to use if possible.

If you test that the battery sled circuit is okay and all the batteries have sufficient voltage, then start testing all the wiring inside of the Stampede, check which are breaking the circuit.

Also check that all the pressure switches are working properly.

Lastly, if everything is okay but the motor still does not move, then most likely the motor has somehow failed and will need to be replaced. You can get similar motors from machine parts shops.

    ReplyDelete
  66. which one should i get? a longshot or a stampede? i like accurate guns like longshot but i also like auto guns.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Does the nerf stampede lose ANY battery while it's off? Also, how many shots can it shoot before the D batteries die?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Dear SgNerf,
Do you know what kind of motor i can replace it with? Like a stronger one? And how do i check to see if the pressure switches are working?

    ReplyDelete
  69. I have a few more questions: is the motor geared? ungeared?
    Should i get a 6V motor or something broader like 6v -18v?
How can I figure out if it'll be more durable than the stock motor?
How do I replace the motor? (steps for installing a new one)
There are only 4 pressure switches on the Stampede right? How do I check to see if they work? and what wires am I checking with the multimeter(the ones connecting from the sled to the motor,on/off switch, the other thing that is neither of those; its right next to the motor)?
What should I do if it is a wire issue? or if something else burned out besides the motor.
    Thank you for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I noticed the motor has a 10 teeth gear on it; does it matter if the replacement motor has an 8 teeth gear?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Oscar,

When the Stampede is in off mode, in theory the batteries will not be used, but you should remove them if you are not using the blaster for longer periods to prevent them from leaking over time.

How many clips a battery can fire would depend on the type and quality of the batteries used.

A high quality set could fire 100+ clips, while a low quality set might only fire a dozen or so clips, so you just have to test them to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ed,

For replacement motors, i'm still testing out various types to see which fit well, but i'm not really focusing much time on it though so i can't really help you much on that aspect yet.

Replacing a motor is just a matter of removing the original motor and installing in the aftermarket motor, have to make sure all the wiring, gears and contacts are installed back in their proper positions.

You should try to use gears that are the same ratios as the original gears, changes in gear ratios could affect the operation of the firing cycle. But you're welcomed to test new gear ratios and see what happens, do post your findings though. :)

As for the pressure switches and wiring, you can run a low current through each point to test if the connections are okay, once you find the fault, then that's what you need to solve.

If it is a wiring issue, replace and re-solder the wiring, same as for the pressure switches.

    ReplyDelete
  80. kieran,

Yes, the Nerf Stampede is a good blaster to get.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Samza,

Simply remove the suction tips from those foam darts and fill in the tip with the original rubber stem and abit of glue (remember to attach additional soft padding to the tips for safety), then they can be loaded into N-Strike clips.

    ReplyDelete
  82. so you can't have the suction bits on them. I want this so i can draw a smiley face on the wall.
    thanx anyway

    ReplyDelete
  83. geoexplorer,

The battery converter shells allow smaller sized batteries to be used in the Nerf Stampede, so that you can use AA-sized batteries as an alternative to D-sized batteries.

I was wondering should I spend it all on the stampede or seperate it out on other guns? I have heard about the stampedes noise from my friends and they say its very loud. I'm more of a camper in my nerf wars so i dont know if the stampede would be good for me. Is it a good deal for 60 dollars? I really like all the attachments but i dont know. Please help!

    ReplyDelete
  89. DreamCrusher,

Yup, i'd recommend you to get the Stampede.

It's a clip-fed motorized full auto blaster that can be shoulder aimed comfortably for quick fire and movement. It works well in most Nerf game scenarios.

Not sure how you can be a "camper" in Nerf games, even if you hide, once you start firing any Nerf blaster everyone will know where you are anyways. :)

  93. Awesome gun, definatly one of my favs from Nerf, wish though they used the motor or design for this one in the REV-10, damn thing is loud and at least the Stampede only makes noise when it's firing not constant like the Barricade

    ReplyDelete
  94. Got the Stampede ECS for my son for Christmas, he's 6 and I hit uber pro Dad status! woot! Until the next day when he showed his friends and it wouldn't fire. We spent about 15 clips the first day without a single jam. Now it make the firing sound and you can see the 'pin' and spring move but the result is a dart becoming impaled and pulled back into the pins resting position. Firing again, this stuck dart just crushes the next dart in the clip. Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hunter70,

It could be due to something inside the blaster either getting mis-aligned or somehow damaged.

If you can't open it up to troubleshoot, then i'd advise to simply return it to the dept store to exchange for a new working unit.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Thanks SGnerf.

    just one more quick question:

If I can consistently fire the Raider as fast as if not faster than the Stampede fires, and don't mind doing so, would you recommend the Raider or the Stampede? (The Raider is $5-$10 cheaper than the Stampede in my area)

    ReplyDelete
  97. josh,

    I'd still recommend the Stampede.

Its not whether you can fire the same or faster with a Raider. Its the fact that the Stampede doesn't require constant manual priming to operate.

Just aim, pull the trigger and the motorized spring plunger fires all the shots automatically, so you could also use equip a second blaster in the other hand for extra firepower... or even carry 2 Stampedes to dual-wield.

    Can't do that with a Raider. :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hey,

While I was using my Stampede, I noticed that it had a lower RoF than the Stampede you showed in the video. Also, after using it for sometime, it either fires very slowly or stops halfway through, requiring me to hit it before it can fire. I thought it was a battery problem, but then when I tested the batteries when putting them into a Vulcan, they worked perfectly.

Is there anything I can do for my Stampede? I had it for about a month or so.

    ReplyDelete
  99. We have a problem with our Nerf Stampede ECS. It won't fire in the normal position. However if you keep pointing it forward and twist it through 180 degrees (i.e., upside down) it starts firing. You can slowly twist it round but before it is the right way round it slows then stops. Any ideas/suggestions very welcome!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Foo Yang Yi,

It could be due to the batteries weakening over time and usage... change the batteries to fresh new ones.

If when used with fresh new batteries and it still exhibits this issue, then the circuit connections could be loose which create an inconsistent power supply from the battery sled.

You'll have to use a multimeter to check the circuit to see which points are loose or not allowing current to flow through properly, then replace the contacts or wiring.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Mark,

Check the contacts in your Stampede's battery sled, its probably loose and the batteries only have good contact when the unit is upside down.

You could try stretching the contact metal springs abit to extend their reach and help keep the batteries together more securely.

  102. hi SG Nerf,

I got a stampede ecs and modded it and when I used high voltages (18 volts, stock spring, AR's removed) it was firing even after I released the trigger! And it wasn't the plunger release spring problem that you posted. I'm guessing some spring isn't catching, and only on high voltages...? Do you know what is causing this

    ReplyDelete
  103. hi sg nerf,

I have one more question... when I modded my nerf stampede I noticed that the plunger release catch spring was really weak. So that may be the reason that it was firing after I released the trigger?!... I think that that it doesn't have enough time to retract at high voltages ... maybe ... , and if I upgraded it would that fix it (I would get a stronger spring)?

    ReplyDelete
  104. rapidfiresweetness,

For the Stampede "auto-running" issue at higher voltages and RoF, it depends on unit to unit. I have sets that fire perfectly even at 30V, while I also have sets that start to have issues at just 15V.

Your observation that the return speed of the bolt affects this issue is correct.

After solving dozens of Stampede units, i've found that there are lots of different things that slow down the return speed.

The plunger catch control spring (positioned under the plunger) is one of the reasons, a stronger one can help.

Another common reason is the black return spring (around the bolt) is somehow slightly weaker in some units, so far many such units have been solved with a simple slight stretch of the black spring to uprate its load slightly to increase the return speed.

Yet another reason is an over-tight plunger o-ring or lack of lube, so there is added resistance internally which slows down the return speed.

Also, sometimes even the casing and parts have too tight a fit due to parts manufacturing variations and need to be trimmed to reduce the resistance. I have actually solved the issue in a few Stampedes by simply applying lube to the parts that are in contact to reduce their resistance too.

You can have a read at some of the solutions we have successfully used on problem Stampede units so far in this NerfSG forum thread:

    http://nerfsg.freeforums.org/nerf-stampede-troubleshooting-guide-t1877-10.html#p23131

    ReplyDelete
  105. thanks,

I added WD-40 to everything and it seems to help. I also added e-tape under the o-ring when i tested the e-tape and WD-40 it seems to work ok. I used a custom 12 AA battery pack i made with e-tape for the above test.

When I was changing the things above I thought it had something to do with the white part that links the trigger to the pressure plate-button. After all, it only has a split second to stop the motor when the breech is open, maybe it is bouncing back? (which is the only time that the motor can stop). But after the tests in the first paragraph working I don't know what to think of it- this is just an idea ... thanks for all of the feedback i'll try some of those ideas.

I think the black return spring could need to be tightened because I hear misfires if you know what i mean-no ar and sometimes no cracking sound (needs padding though)

I just tested it and it is sucking darts up like I guessed it would do. Its not catching!!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. rapidfiresweetness,

Try out various ways to solve the issue, its different in every Stampede unit.

Btw, don't use WD-40 as lube for the plunger o-ring, that tends to damage the o-rings. Make sure you use grease which are labeled as specifically safe for rubber o-rings.

  108. do you notice that there are certain letters on your streamline darts?(OR clip system darts)
K's have terrible range and accuracy and they come with the recon, and the raider.

E's currently only come with the stampede and in think they are well made because the foam is much tougher and lighter than the K's.

A's come with the bandolier set and the old flip clip sets. they act a lot lot like K's

T's are the ones that come with the longshot, newer flip clip sets and boast the best range and accuracy from both modded and stock blasters from my experience.

What do you think? please reply.
p.s sorry for writng so much.hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  109. barrettm107cqbr,

Well, from my experience so far, i have not seen much differences in the performance or accuracy with streamlines darts that have different letters at their tips.

I've test many different batches back to back and i've found that they all fly inconsistently anyways (as streamlines always do), so their performance differences seem to be inconclusive.

I guess its just a batch production thing.

  110. i have found thatthe best batteries are Ultracell alcaline batteries

  111. The sight of the stampede is really inaccurate, If i use the flip up sight from Recon or Longstrike, will this help?

    ReplyDelete
  112. wafi,

Well, if you are still using Nerf streamline foam darts in a stock Stampede, then the adjustable ladder sight from the Recon could help as it'll assist in aiming the blaster at a higher trajectory required (ie. aiming above the target)

Though note that streamline foam darts tend to be inaccurate and inconsistent and stock Stampedes don't have the power to fire foam darts far.

So even if you use other types of sights, your shots are not going to land consistently on the target that you are directly aiming at (other than at very close range).

For range and accuracy, you'll need to mod it to fire further (so that the foam darts can travel more distance in a flat trajectory before dropping), and you'd need to custom calibrate your foam darts so that they become consistently accurate.

Only then would the sight on the Stampede be usable and accurate at the targets you are aiming at.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Ok,thanks If i only remove the AR's will that help? and by how much will the distance of the darts shot increase?

With just AR removal, you should be able to see a 10-15ft range improvement.

    ReplyDelete
  118. wafi,

If i remember correctly, they lasted through around 100+ clips worth of firing... though it's still better to use rechargeable batteries instead, much more cost effective.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hey can I use rechargeable D-sized Batteries? They sell em in my area

    ReplyDelete
  120. wafi,

Yes, you can try using rechargeable D-batteries, but do note that rechargeable NiMh batteries are usually rated at 1.2V, so 6 of them would only output 7.2V, which is less than the stock 9V required.

So although it can work, your firing speed would tend to be slower.

Alternatively, you can also consider using rechargeable AA-batteries instead (with AA-D shell converters), 'cos they would be more useful for use other common electronics devices... compared to rechargeable D-batteries which are usable only in a limited number of devices.

  125. Hi SG Nerf, recently my modded stampede's plunger padding flew out when I was firing. I replaced the padding and lubricated it again. After I screwed it closed, it decided to jam every other dart. It fires the first dart, then jams on the next dart. Once I clear the jammed dart, it fires then jams. I opened it up again and checked whether I put the padding the wrong way. I did not, closed the gun, but it still refuses to fire properly. It was firing properly before I changed the padding. The only thing I did when I opened up the gun the first time other than to change the padding, was to stretch the spring to give extra range. Is that the problem or is it something else?

    ReplyDelete
  126. nikhilk,

Check that the plunger and bolt system, dart blocker paddle system, firing timing system and all the small springs are aligned properly, sometimes if just one part is not exactly aligned, jams will occur more frequently.

Try not to stretch springs, 'cos that eventually weakens them and there is a chance they get mis-shapen and cause issues during operation.

    ReplyDelete
  136. batman,

Perhaps your batteries have drained and need to be replaced?

In addition, if you have increased the spring load, you will also need to use power sources with higher discharge rate (different from voltage) so that the motor can draw enough current for higher torque, such as unprotected Li-Ion batteries.

As mentioned in my Stampede Mod Guide:

    http://modworks.blogspot.com/2010/09/nerf-stampede-mod-guide.html

Normal alkaline batteries usually don't have high enough discharge rates to supply the necessary current for the motor to pull heavier spring loads, it will end up slow or stalling.

    ReplyDelete
  140. karthik,

Battery shell converters can be bought from electronics parts supply shops. If you are in Singapore, check at Unicell shop at Sim Lim Square 2nd floor.

If you are using alkaline batteries, the different sizes just vary in mAh capacity. mAH determines how long they last, the larger the battery the more mAh, which last longer (and vice versa). Their voltages are all still the same 1.5V, so performance wouldn't change... unless you use more batteries (or higher voltage types) to increase the amount of voltage feed.

    ReplyDelete
  142. karthik,

If the Raider was working properly previously and only now its starting to jam frequently, then try using brand new foam darts and see if that solves the issue.

If it still jams too often, then something inside the blaster is either mis-aligned or damaged, you'll have to open it up to check and fix... or else just buy a new set.

So far, i've not experienced much jamming issues in my units. As long as you use foam darts and clips that are in good condition, the system should run smoothly.

Yes, the Stampede will still continue firing when the clip is empty... but in stock condition, there are air restrictors (AR) intact to cushion the plunger impacts, so there is no damage to the system.

On the other hand, if you mod the Stampede and remove the AR, then you'll have to be more aware of your clip ammo count and stop firing once it is empty to reduce the chances of plunger damage.

I am about to buy a new gun, I was just wondering whether the stampede is accurate and also the average range in stock condition. Which gun would you recommend for me? I like a accurate gun with good range and preferably semi/full auto. I have a longshot and am very happy with its range and accuracy but it has to be primed every time it is fired, thus it is not a gun that can be used in wars!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Shashwat Jha,

The Stampede would be a suitable blaster as it is currently still the only full-auto blaster which is clip fed (compatible with all the N-Strike clips and drum magazines).

Its ranges average around 25-30ft which is similar to most stock Nerf blasters.

Accuracy is also similar to other Nerf blasters too... note that accuracy depends mainly on the type of foam darts used and their condition.

  162. Do you think that making the Stampede manually primed would be possible?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

It might be possible with some modding work... but do note that the Stampede's operating mechanism is different from a conventional manual spring plunger blaster.

In a conventional manually primed blaster, the plunger rod is pulled back to catch, then the bolt moves forward to chamber the foam dart to be ready to fire.

But in a Stampede, it sits in an open position, when it fires the entire bolt and plunger assembly is moved forward to chamber the foam dart while the plunger rod stays catched behind until the bolt reaches the most forward point then the mechanism is synchronized to release the plunger rod and fire automatically... so the system never stays catched, it has to complete an entire firing cycle before coming to rest back in the open bolt position.

I guess you'll have to study the system and see how it works to find out if the mod is feasible :)

I can get Elite darts with any of them, but which blaster?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. josh,

It depends on whether you are planning to use them stock or modded.

If you are planing to only use them in stock condition, then get the Elite blasters like the Rampage or Hail-Fire, as they are designed to achieve longer ranges in stock condition.

Note that both the Rayven and Hail-Fire are flywheel blasters, you have to try them out to see if you actually like flywheel type systems (some people tend to get annoyed by the buzzing noise and feel from flywheel blasters).

If you are planning to mod the blasters, then get the Stampede, it is full-auto and due to its larger direct plunger system, it can achieve longer ranges after modding.

      Delete
    2. Does modding include doing things like swapping out the normal darts for elite darts and/or putting more powerful batteries in?

      Delete
    3. josh,

Using Elite foam darts is not considered "modding"... it's just using different stock ammo (unless you are referring to using custom calibrated foam darts or stefans, then thats a part of modding).

Modding usually means doing stuff like removing air restrictors, installing stronger springs, improving plunger seals, creating more efficient breech systems etc... or in the case of motorized blasters, increasing voltage feeds too.

      Delete
    4. If I'm only planning on increasing voltage if I get a stampede, which would you recommend?
Will a Stampede using elite darts get 60-75 feet?

      Delete
    5. josh,

Well, increasing the voltage will basically just speed up the Stampede's rate-of-fire, which is useful as it is a full-auto blaster.

With elite foam darts, the average flat ranges would improve but not by that much (usually just 10-20% further than compared to streamlines)... longer ranges are only be possible if you remove the air restrictors and install stronger aftermarket springs.
