Nerf Barrel Break IX-2 - Review!

This is for all double barrelled shotgun fans...

The Nerf Barrel Break IX-2!

The Nerf Barrel Break is primed by "break-opening" its double barrels in a downwards motion.

A switch on the side initiates the opening of the barrels. Foam darts are inserted into the opened barrels to load and once the barrels are closed, the blaster is ready to fire. Each reload can fire 2 foam darts, after which it will have to be reloaded again.

The blaster can fire one dart at a time or both darts at the same time, controlled by the depth of the trigger pull. Firing range is around 25-30ft.

It comes with 10 Whistler foam darts and a special tactical rail mounted Ammo Holder that can hold up to 8 foam darts. The Barrel Break is compatible with most Nerf foam darts and tactical rail accessories.

  2. also... does this have a reverse plunger system?

    ReplyDelete
  3. bob,

    Yup, 2 reverse plungers.

Check out my Barrel Break Internals Guide for more details:

  4. WW,

    Its approx. 45cm in length.

    ReplyDelete
  5. is the ammo holder good?cuz it looks like anytime the bullets may just fall out.cuz when in battle i'll be running around and i dun want to stop just to pick up my bullets

    ReplyDelete
  6. Zul,

From my experience, the ammo holder grips on to the foam darts securely, they will not drop out when users are running. :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Euan 'Nerf' French,

Sure, it'll make a good sidearm.

The usual mods can be done, ie. AR removals, spring replacements etc.

    ReplyDelete
  8. SGNerf,

Do you mind sharing it's length in inches? My ruler doesn't have centimeters on it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. SGNerf,

    Full length, please!

    ReplyDelete
  10. WW's,

Just take 45 cm divide by 2.54 cm, what do you get?

Dude, brush up on your math, this is basic stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  11. SGNerf,

I have figured it out already.

  12. The barrel break is now on the US toysrus.com for 19.99... cheaper than i thought it would be :D

  13. Anybody know about a release date in Australia and where to buy them?

    ReplyDelete
  14. richey,

For Nerf blaster availability in Australia, perhaps you can check with the aussie nerfers over at the OzNerf forum:

  15. cool, ill pick up one of these things and see if icant turn this into a pretty desent side arm

    ReplyDelete
  16. A)what's the average range
B)can you go back to the dart tag vest on the wall when test firing please, i prefer it.
C)can you break the barrel with one hand? i want some double gun slinging action!

    ReplyDelete
  17. nathanael,

As mentioned in my review, the average stock range is around 25-30ft with Sonic foam darts.

From long term feedback, more readers prefer the hands-on demo and features video style.

I guess you could dual wield them, but priming each Barrel Break with only one hand will require some practice, 'cos the break action requires some physical force to operate... one method could be to grip the handle underneith an arm and do the breaking of barrel with one hand, load 2 foam darts, then flip the barrel back up and pull it back with the same hand.

    ReplyDelete
  18. maybe you could do both styles of tests

    ReplyDelete
  19. My Break barrel Shoots about 50 feet stock, the measurement was taken with an average of 10 darts. I was standing with the gun at about 50 degrees tilt to the ground and holding 3.5 feet off the ground. The gun is stock and all shots were fired as double shot.

    ReplyDelete
  20. NanoStriker,

Yup, when fired at an angle, stock Nerf blasters can get further range too.

But do note that when comparing average ranges, we usually use parallel-to-ground test shots (blaster held level to gound and fired), as this method is a more common baseline for range comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Isn't it kind of impractical? wouldn't it be hard to reload on the run? surely a six shot easy load clip on a recon would be better? What's your opinion, being that at the moment I cannot get my hands on one. And what does "IX-2" mean? I think a good mod would to make it into a double CS system.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Zack,

It all depends on the user... some players prefer to be able to fire 2 shots before re-priming their blaster.

I guess those who use it also like its "break action" style. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Zack,

The "IX" suffix is typically found in spring plunger blasters, and the "2" refers to the number of darts it can fire.

  24. Is The Break Barrel Available In Singapore Yet?
If Yes Where Can i Find One?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Edgar,

The Nerf Barrel Break is available at Toys R Us stores in Singapore.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Very much a must for HvZ goers, I've built out a twist-draw holster originally for my maverick/recon, but the Barrel Break sits way better and comes with two shots off the draw. By far my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  27. can it shoot streamlines?

    ReplyDelete
  28. bob,
Not very well. In my tests they reached a max range of 2m with the streamline darts, compared to 8m with the micro and whistler darts.

    ReplyDelete
  29. aaron,

As mentioned in my review, average stock range is around 25-30ft.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I just bought the Barrel Break ix-2, It's a whole lot of fun. The only thing I didn't like was that when I got mine from Toy's R Us, they didn't include the tactical rail for the ammo. It says sold separately on the box and that kind of suck.

Is this the same for anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  31. SoulEater6828,

The Ammo Rail is supposed to be packaged with the Nerf Barrel Break, i'd suggest you exchange it at the store for a new set which has it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Is the tactical rail attachment sold seperatly?

    ReplyDelete
  33. aaron,

The Ammo Rail attachment is included in the Nerf Barrel Break package.

    ReplyDelete
  34. SG,Have you tried shooting it in streamline? Is it more than 2m as according to SteveTehPirate?

    ReplyDelete
  35. youknowwho,

Although streamline darts can be used in the Barrel Break, the performance of those darts are less optimal due to the dart chambering design of the Barrel Break.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh come on!!! Its a good gun?!?!?!?! I'll laugh my head off. This post is more about the cons than the pros because this gun has more cons than pros. I'll list it down.

    pros:
    Good range
    Can fire twice(if fired single)
Super cool way of reloading it.
    OK for a backup weapon

    cons:
    Slow reload
    Jams almost every 4 times
Hard to FULLY insert darts inside
Bullets drop out of ammo rail often when jumping or ducking or running
Annoyingly small for a shot-gun(I mean really small. Not comfortable)
Can't be used as a secondary weapon(I don't care what SG Nerf or Euan 'Nerf' French said)
Ammo rail blocks vision when lifted higher than shoulder height(to get more range)

So it sucks. I hate it. Unless you use it as your backup weapon, don't bring it into a battlefield or buy it for collection.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This reminds me I can recreate the scene from Resident Evil Afterlife using two barrel breaks :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Will it...

    1. Shoot tagger darts?
    2. Shoot suction cups darts?
    3. Jam from time-to-time or often?
    4. Flip open the barrel like a real sawn-off shotgun just by swinging the gun?
    5. Have a hole at the bottom of the handle like like the Raider and the Recon?
    6. Can I add something like a paper cylinder to the darts, so when I fling-break the barrel, the shells will fling out like a real sawn-off?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Will it...

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes.
    3. It rarely jams 'cos the ammo are manually loaded.
    4. Tough, as the "break" action requires effort to prime the blaster, so it doesn't just swing so easily.
    5. No spare ammo slot in the trigger handle.
    6. There isn't a feature to eject shells, wrapping paper around the foam darts would most likely just mess up the chambering and firing process.

If you want to have shells popping out when breaking open the blaster, get the Buzz Bee Double Shot instead... happy picking up all the shells. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I won't be picking up the shells.... I'm just gonna blast and reload in style.... XD

    ReplyDelete
  41. I picked up a Barrel Break today from my local Toys R Us. TRU Canada is having a sale on them (only $15 each).

I ran into an issue. When I angle the barrels down to crank them, then angle them back to their standard position, don't shoot, and angle back down again, the barrels lock into place in the open position.

I then have to remove the screws from the body and slide the two halves apart slightly until they click. Then angle the barrels back down, flip them up, and pull the trigger.

There doesn't seem to be a jam clearing mechanism, so when the barrels lock, I have to reach for a screwdriver and split the sides until my fiddling around produces a click sound. Is this normal?

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1337W422102,

Doesn't seem normal, perhaps you should just exchange it at the store for a new working unit.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I kept trying to use the gun, but found more and more went wrong. Opening the barrels resulted in more of a grinding/clicking sound, suggesting that something inside is messed up, and it wasn't able to fire out of the left barrel at all. The dart stayed on the cross-shaped piece and no air went through the left barrel when I pulled the trigger halfway and all the way back.

I returned it today for a refund. It's a fun gun, but I'm really not please with the errors I encountered.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 1337W422102,

Seems like you got a really faulty unit, good idea to return it to the store for a refund.

    ReplyDelete
  45. sorry if this is annoying, but are you going to post a mod guide?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oscar,

Nope, i'm not planning to post a Mod Guide on the Nerf Barrel Break.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Do you know if there is anyway to get my hands on some of those dart holders? I'd like to put a couple of those on my buzzbee version of this.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Reverend TB,

I guess you'll just have to get more Barrel Breaks to get more of those ammo holders. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. IsseyPissey,

I've no idea... perhaps you can just check with the dept stores in NZ.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What would rate the Barrel Break out of 10?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nerf 101,

6 out of 10 perhaps... imho, its more for the "break action" style factor, rather than practical effectiveness in actual Nerf games. :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hey is it available in Singapore?> and where can I get it?(:

    ReplyDelete
  53. Desmond Yeo,

At local Toys R Us stores.

    ReplyDelete
  54. TO SG Nerf:

Oh great! Thanks! I am gonna get mine real soon. Cause I went to Toys R Us at Vivo, didnt get to see it..

Oh by the way, I checked at Paragon the Metro, there are no longshots there anymore! haha just an update if its useful!(:

    ReplyDelete
  55. someone help me when i do single shot i can't shoot the other one

    ReplyDelete
  56. jimmy,

Seems you got a faulty unit, just exchange it at the store for a new working set.

    ReplyDelete
  57. where can i find just the ammo rack?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Brandi Niedermeier,

The Ammo Holder comes packaged only with the Barrel Break, it is not sold separately.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Francis,

At Toys R Us stores in Singapore.

    ReplyDelete
  60. what is better the long strike or this plx awser

    ReplyDelete
  61. thomas,

If comparing those 2 blasters, the Longstrike will be more effective in Nerf games because it uses the N-Strike clip system.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Is the Barrel Break still available in SG??

    ReplyDelete
  63. nivek99,

It seems to be sold out at most dept stores locally, quite rare nowadays. You'll just have to shop around to find them.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh man!! 1st the LongShot now the Barrel Break! Coming into a hobby late sure stinks!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. will any new barrel break stock be coming?

    ReplyDelete
  66. nerf boy,

No idea, just check directly with the dept store staff on when they plan to re-stock.

    ReplyDelete
  67. do u know y stores don't restock barrel break? They only stock other guns is very strange

    ReplyDelete
  68. nerf boy,

Perhaps it's a limited run model? Or maybe the dept stores just prefer to stock the more popular models. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. i use SG nerf because it is informational evan though i live in oz any way can the Kidwell mod
    on this blaster

    ReplyDelete
  70. thomas,

The "kidwell mod" can also be done on this blaster too, but most experienced Nerf modders wouldn't recommend that method of removing the AR.

Its because drilling out the AR while the bolt is still inside the blaster tends to result in plastic bits and dust getting stuck inside the plunger o-ring seals and decreasing the efficiency, so its not really an optimal way of modding a Nerf blaster.

In addition, you'll also have to be careful not to drill too much and damage the plunger tube itself.

Imho, its still better (and much neater) to open up the casing and remove the AR properly. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. What is your review on this gun? (:

    ReplyDelete
  72. Chase,

I guess its more of a novelty blaster, more for style than for actual Nerf games. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. does singapore sell this,if yes,where?

    ReplyDelete
  74. New Towner,

They seem to be all sold out in local stores now.

You'll have to search at overseas stores or online to get them.

    ReplyDelete
  75. can i know which websites does this?

    ReplyDelete
  76. New Towner,

    Check at Amazon.com or eBay.com.

    ReplyDelete
  77. they say they cant shipped them here, what do i do?

    ReplyDelete
  78. New Towner,

In that case, you'll need to use a 3rd party international shipper.

Here are some links to them:

    http://www.vpost.com.sg

    http://www.onenow.com

    http://www.borderlinx.com

Do check their rates and read their terms properly, the shippers calculate shipping rates by volumetric weight, so be prepared for higher than expected overall costs if the delivery box is larger than the original box.

    ReplyDelete
  79. There's TONS of these in Thailand right now. All the Toys R Us have them in large quantities.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Hi SGNerf

Will dropping a Nerf N-Strike blaster affect the range or the internals ?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Keith,

Possible, if the drop impact happens to damage any of the internal components or working parts.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hi SGnerf,

do you recommend the barrel break, deploy or the raider?

    thanks.
