Nerf Titan AS-V.1 - Review!

Okay, i've received queries from people asking whether that red rocket launcher featured in "The Great Office War" was an actual Nerf blaster. Well, i'd just like to say... meet the Nerf Titan AS-V.1!

Some brief model background: The Nerf Titan was originally part of a Nerf package called the Unity System, it comprised of 3 Nerf blasters: The Nerf Titan AS-V.1, Hornet AS-6 and Scout IX-3.

Nerf now offers the Titan as a standalone model. They call it the "Big Bad Titan", it is currently a Target exclusive model, and can only be purchased from Target stores or online.

The Nerf Titan comes with a Mega missile which is propelled by compressed air stored in the Titan's air chamber, it takes around 12-15 pumps via the stock handle to fully prime the Titan. It also features a rotating pressure gauge to inform you once it hits max pressure.

The Mega missile features angled stabilizer tail fins that work surprisingly well. When fired, you can actually see the Mega missile soaring through the air while spiraling smoothly on its axis to maintain its line of flight.

Review:

Although the Nerf Titan's indicated firing range is approx. 60 ft, i've tested and it can easily exceed that range. Aimed abit higher, with a lob trajectory, the mega missile flew 80+ ft down my office corridor!

Definitely a very interesting model to add to any Nerf collection! :)

  5. hey SG,

I bought myself a titan and it doesn't shoot as far as expected. Each time I shoot, the missle hits the ground before 20 feet. I was aiming higher than shoulder level.

Could you tell me whats wrong and how I could fix it?

    Thanks

  6. Gartha Theblu,

Looks like you have a faulty unit there and it sounds like there is a leak in the air tank or pump system.

Best to return it to the store and exchange it for a brand new one.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hi SG,

I kinda figured out the problem to my titan: I hadn't pumped it enough to fully prime it.

Now with 16 pumps, it can reach about 38-40 feet. I was wondering if pumping it more than 16 times would break the air bladder?

Also, I have not fully attached the barrel post in order to be able to remove it for easy transportation. Might that affect the range? Once attached, do you need to open the blaster to take it out?

    Thanks so much.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Gartha Theblu,

The Titan in stock condition has a over-pressure release in its pump system, so if you over-pump it, the excess air will be released.

The orange barrel has to be attached securely into the Titan for proper air flow. If not, there might be some air leakage that may occur when firing.

Yes, once the orange barrel is securely attached, it can only be removed by opening the blaster casing.

  9. How strong in the rail on the side, strong enough to reload a recon?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Joeri,

Its possible, though the reverse tactical rail is actually designed more for the smaller blasters.

    ReplyDelete
  11. There is a way to nullify the barrel locking system... simply cut off the 4 tabs around the screw end...

P.S. Ive been wondering what the clip/ bypass valve is for at the bottom of the launcher... is it for charging an accessory or is it for a remote tank system to eliminate the need to pump?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Also, Ive found that if you cut away the slotted baffles from the end of the threaded nozzle and the end of the barrel you can achieve a greater performance of the unit...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Christopher,

The section at the bottom of the Titan is designed for attaching a Nerf Hornet. There is no connection to the air tank from there.

The trigger in the front grip is used to fire the attached Nerf Hornet.

    ReplyDelete
  14. There IS a connection to the air tank, but its 1 way... IN... that valve at the bottom is directly in line with the primary compression chamber of the pumping arm... Ive theorized that the factory uses this valve to charge the blaster for testing purposes rather than having to pump each unit manually...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Christopher,

Sorry my mistake... you're right, there is indeed an air link connection at the bottom section. Its been a while since i used the Titan. :)

That air link shares the Titan's air volume with an attached Nerf Hornet.

So when you attach a Nerf Hornet, you just need to pump up the Titan and the Hornet's air tank will also be filled up at the same time.

  16. when ever i pump up the titan it lets out an anoying squike. is this normal?

    ReplyDelete
  17. jackp0pe,

The squeaking sound when you pump a Titan comes from friction at the pump's rubber o-ring. Its common.

To reduce the squeaking sound, you could open up the Titan and apply additional rubber-compatible lubricant to the o-ring (ie. synthetic grease) to reduce the friction that tends to cause squeaky sounds.

  23. Is there any way to purchase separate missiles without buying it from others?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nerf Meagafan,

Nerf Titan foam missiles were available to be ordered as replacement items from Hasbro USA, but i'm not sure if they are still available anymore.

The cost is quite high just to ship them all the way in from USA anyways, so its usually easier to just buy from other Nerf Titan owners.

Alternatively, just make your own foam missiles out of large OD foam tubes. :)

  25. Oh...I'll be lazy to make it so... never mind. I won't lose the rocket due to its size anyway.

  32. Hi SG! I'm new to this website and to your blog and from what i've seen you seem to know a lot about nerf guns! I've came with a question that i'm in a desperate need to figure out the answer to (as I couldn't find any answers on google) and I was wondering why my gun's pressure would decrease over time? I pump it up to the max and in about 5 seconds, as i look at the pressure gauge, it goes down down and down. Could you please give me some insight as to how I could possibly fix this? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  33. CC64,

If you pump it up and see the air pressure decreasing over time, then its a sign that there is an air leak in the system.

You'll have to open up the casing and check all the air hoses, air tank system and trigger. Listen out for any hissing sounds that would indicate a leak in that part.

Alternatively, you could pump it up, then dip it into a tub of water and watch where the air bubbles come out from, that's the leak area.

To fix the leaks, apply a layer of 2-part epoxy glue or plumbers goop glue to cover the leaking gaps to seal it. Make sure the glue cures fully before testing it again.

  34. Whould you be able to strap a few Scatter blasts on the missile and make sort of a RPG

  35. Rob.s,

Not likely, the Scatter Blasts would be to heavy to be propelled by the Titan. :)

  36. Hey SG Nerf, is the Titan in stores yet? If it is, how much is it?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sky,

The Nerf Titan was released back in 2004, and has been available in stores since then.

You'll have to shop around to find them though, they seem quite rare nowadays.

  39. cyberfireblaze,

Its not available in Singapore. You have to order from overseas.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I took both air restrictors out and it doesn't seemed to do anything, I shot it outside and it got about 35. I cut the barrel about a half inch so would that impact it that much?

    ReplyDelete
  41. chadmb,

Nerf Titans (and other air tank blasters) don't have "air restrictors", the grill-like caps are air baffles which are designed to just prevent users from putting things into to barrel, they don't restrict the air.

So it doesn't matter if you remove them or not, they don't affect the performance much.

If you are firing the foam missile, the barrel should be kept at the original length for best performance, because if you cut it shorter, the foam missile will have less "seal time" before it gets launched. The air will escape earlier due to the short barrel as the foam missile moves forward. So the range will drop if you use a shorter barrel.

Though do also check that your unit is holding pressure properly and there are no leaks in the first place, 'cos that would also reduce power and affect the range performance.

  42. i have heard that the titan cant fire past a certain angle due to a small lock that activates after going past said angle.

Is this true and if so what is this angle?

    ReplyDelete
  43. fooder331,

Yes, there is a ball activated angle lock to prevent it from being fired at too high an angle... i'd estimate that it activates at around 30-35 degrees angle.

Its basically to prevent users from accidentally firing the foam missile into trees or onto the roof of their houses... 'cos it only comes with one foam missile and replacements are rather difficult to find. :)

  45. refering to (at the top) Christophers answer the extra trigger can it fire anything else attached to he bottom? if not thats a bit dodgy from nerf as people can make there own unit power system for cheap ?! If i was nerf id remodel and take out the extra trigger ...........but it does add popularity to it which im getting it

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

The extra front trigger is designed to fire an attached Nerf Hornet unit that is attached at the bottom of the Titan, you can see a configuration of it in my Hulk Abomination Blaster review:

      http://sgnerf.blogspot.com/2009/03/hulk-abomination-blaster-review.html

Btw, the Titan's pump also channels air into the Hornet unit via a connection valve too, so both the Titan and Hornet are pumped up at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In Canada they are selling these titanic guns for $9.99. I bought one about two weeks ago. When fully pumped up, it'll easily shoot 40-50 feet, but if you want some insane power out of it, then look no further than the foam missile. if you look at the outer edge of the tip of the missile, you'll see a couple air holes that lead directly into the air chamber of the missile. Get some nylon or plastic screws and thread them into these holes, then cover the heads of the screws with a couple wraps of electrical tape to ensure the screws can't get blown out. pump it to full and let er rip, just don't aim it at anything you want to keep upright, cuz it'll now have enough power to knock over lamps, small children and animal etc. lol. The first time I fired the titan after modding the missile, I fired it at my stainless steel 20 gallon kitchen garbage can and it left a huge dent in the side of it as well as knocking it across the kitchen floor. when my 5 year old son fires it at the wall at full power it makes a sickening thud that makes you realize that you never want to be on the receiving end of that missile! It also has a significant recoil which will knock him off balance if he isn't ready for it. I imagine the holes in the missile were put there to lessen the recoil as well as tone down the velocity of the missile. Since I did this mod to his titan, I have strictly banned him from using it in the house due to the carnage.

  49. SG Nerf,

How much we have to pump the Titan for maximum range? How much it cost?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

It usually takes around 12-15 pumps to fill up the air tank to get optimal ranges, the built-in gauge will also indicate when the air tank is at maximum pressure.

Price-wise, you'll have to check online to find sellers and their prices, 'cos its not sold in Singapore.

  56. SG Nerf, do you get tax of buying the Titan? And how much is the shipping cost?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

If you are referring to ordering items from overseas to ship to Singapore, tax on it will depend on the overall cost of the shipment.

If the overall package + shipping cost exceeds SGD$400 in value, then you'll have to pay an additional 7% GST to customs when it arrives in Singapore... otherwise, if its below SGD$400 in total value, then no tax.

You can read more here: http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/gst-imports.aspx#GST_on_imports

The shipping cost will depend on the seller of the item (ie. type and duration of shipping), you have to check with the seller. Shipping costs can vary alot between sellers, so you have to shop around for the best deals.

  57. I got one of these with the Hornet and the Red scout. At first when I got the gun I was really excited but I had my hopes up a little. The Toys R Us store that I got it from is going to have another toy returned. The Titan doesn't fire anywhere close to 60 ft and it takes 15 pumps just to get it off the pipe thingy. Also the Hornet is a flop as well. Half of the darts don't even fire. I'm taking it back A.S.A.P probably this Saturday and the only good gun that came out of the box was the Scout which I already have another 2 of. Either way, I want my money back or a new Unity Power set! RAGE FACE!!!
