The Nerf Retaliator is a spring-powered direct plunger blaster. It is based on the same main exterior casing design and priming method as the Nerf Recon, but features a new blue Elite color scheme with white detailing.
It comes with the new 12-dart clip and 12 x Elite foam darts. The clip is translucent on the right side for easier viewing of the ammo count.
Elite foam darts are lighter than Streamline foam darts, and their tip weight are focused further forward to enhance performance. In addition, they can also be used with most Nerf blasters.
The Retaliator combines the efficiency of it's direct plunger system and the new Elite foam darts to achieve longer ranges. The box states "fires up to 75ft".
The blaster is packaged with a matching barrel extension, assault grip and shoulder stock. It is compatible with most other N-Strike tactical rail accessories too.
Average stock range is around 45-55ft (parallel-to-ground) or 65-75ft (angled-to-ground).

Deleteive purchase one of these modded bad boys from ebay but i cant seem to load it. i managed to cock the gun but the "slider" will not slide forward fully. as a result, i cannot shoot the gun. something is blocking the 'slider' from moving forward fully. do you know how to fix this?

DeleteIts most likely the internal bolt lock is mis-aligned or damaged... just check around at the NerfSG forum (www.nerfsg.com) to find other local enthusiasts who have the time and are willing to help you fix it.
I have the same problem as Anonymous, but mine isn't modded. Also, I can reload and fire mine, but every now and then that problem will happen and eventually fix itself. Also, the place where the hand grip slides on is jammed, you can put the grip on, but only just take it of. I dare say it was just a faulty product.

On a side note, the Retaliator's extension barrel has new spiral lines in the faux barrel (instead of straight lines in the Recon's extension barrel)... but that is just a cosmetic design, the barrel is too wide for any "rifling" to work and doesn't offer any noticeable performance enhancements.

DeleteFor Nerf games, the Rampage would be more effective overall... 'cos it has the slam-fire feature, primes via a pump action foregrip and comes with a 25-dart drum magazine.
On the other hand, the Retaliator is good as a sidearm if you just use its main blaster unit, which has a compact form factor.

With the extension barrel, ranges tend to be slightly lower, around 10-15% less, due to the foam darts bumping against the walls of the barrel.

Their tip's internal stems are shorter, so they have better compatibility with more Nerf blasters (like Maverick or Speedswarm).
I noticed that these new elite darts don't work well in the longstrike, do you know why?

DeleteWell, Elite blasters get better stock ranges compared to the Rayven, but the Rayven has the advantage of being semi-auto... if you don't mind the buzzing noise of its flywheel motors during operation.
I'm not a fan of flywheel blasters so i'd usually pick spring plunger ones, but its just my personal preference. :)
Am I the only one thinking that they should just make a whole new blaster with all these features instead of just upgrading the Recon?

DeleteTheir front extension barrel design are both mostly similar, the difference is mainly cosmetic.
The Elite version comes in blue and has spiral lines within the barrel... while the N-Strike version comes in yellow and has straight lines in the barrel.
Note that the spiral lines in the Elite extension barrel does not affect the performance, its just a cosmetic design (the breech is still not a sealed system and the barrel diameter is still wider than the foam dart).
The Elite versions are definitely the better blasters in all situations, they are designed to be improved versions of the older N-Strike models and get better ranges out of the box.
Did anyone notice that the Retaliator on the box and the real Retaliator is different? The one on the box has digital camo and white around the BLACK Nerf logo while the real gun doesn't have any of those? Even the Nerf logo is painted on the Assault Grip...

DeleteSo far, i've not encountered any jamming issues on my units. I guess it depends on the user's blaster priming technique and the condition of the foam darts used.
Btw, the Recon was recalled due to the exposed plunger tube in the first generation design which protruded out behind the blaster (it was a safety issue) so they had to add a cap to cover it. The recall wasn't due to jamming issues.

This is a little off topic, but I have a problem with elite darts in my alpha trooper. I have seen videos of elite darts getting the same ranges as streamlines in the AT but in mine they hardly go 5 feet. Does anybody know what's wrong?

DeleteMaybe the batch of Elite foam darts you used happen to be a loose fit in your particular Alpha Trooper unit, so it affects the performance.
Sometimes there are slight variations in foam dart diameters, so just try various batches to see if there are any difference.

DeleteYou can get the Stockade to try (if you have access to them), its basically an improved version of the Barricade, both are motorized flywheel blasters.
I guess you'll have to test it out to see if you like using flywheel blasters. They have a different feel compared to spring plunger blasters... some nerfers like it, some don't. It'll be based on your personal preference.
As for the Retaliator, its an improved version of the Recon, works the same but gets better ranges.

I'm considering buying the Retaliator for HvZ and Assassination on my college campus, but I'm not sure if it is worth it. I already have with me a Barricade and Firestrike, but I became excited when I heard about the 75ft range. However, I was extremely excited five years ago with the 35ft range of the Longshot until I realized that is not far for a gun fight. Is the Retaliator's range really that impressive, or should I wait?

If you prefer to use stock blasters, then the Elite blasters and Elite foam darts will allow you to get longer ranges right out of the box without requiring additional modding.
For modders, they can be easily improved further with relatively simple mods, ie AR removal, stronger springs etc.

You can try using a larger drop leg pouch or dump pouch to holster it instead (that's usually what many players use).

But if you can only choose one, then it depends on your gameplay style...
If you prefer a compact blaster that is maneuverable and light, then get the Retaliator (it can be used as a clip-fed pistol, without the extension barrel or shoulder stock).
If you prefer a larger blaster with higher rate-of-fire and ammo capacity, then get the Rampage (has slam-fire and 25-dart drum magazine).

DeleteUrban Taggers in Australia managed to do an internal comparison of the 75ft versions vs the 15m versions, and they found that Nerf basically just used weaker springs in the 15m versions.

When modified, what are expected ranges. Mods included would be air restrictor removal, and i dout it realy needs a new spring, but if it was to get a spring mod what would you reccomend.

DeleteIt depends on your definition of sniping and the types of blasters other players are using (ie. if they are using modded Longshots, you will still be out-ranged anyways)... the stock Retaliator can hit targets reasonably well at 30-40ft distance, but at longer ranges its not really as accurate due to the Elite foam darts still having the tendency to swerve and curve in flight.

DeleteUnfortunately i've already traded away my grab-it pack holsters a while back, so i can't test them with Recons... but from what i can remember, the Recon seems to be too tall to fit into it (especially with the clip loaded).
There is a newer version of the grab-it pack though (which its supposedly larger), so maybe that new version could fit. I guess you'll have to get one to try out. :)
My nephew got this for christmas, and in less than a day the next morning, the cocking handle jammed.
ReplyDeleteIt got stuck midway after cocking and won't slide forward. This essentially blocked the middle screw; preventing complete disassembly. Fortunately after hours of partial dismantling and inspection, it managed to somehow slide forward completely; the middle screw was finally exposed and I managed to realign all the internal bolt mechanism.
It was firing smooth after that, but shortly got jammed the same way again. Swell.

Hi, just picked up the Retaliator. Noticed that the range is around 40-50ft, but I have noticed that indoors mainly, that the bullets are not accurate ie. they drift of to the side. Most of them never hit where I am aiming for. However, when outside, they are quite straight and accurate. Is this normal or should I go back to the store and exchange it for a new one?

DeleteThats odd, usually its just as inaccurate indoors as it is outdoors. :)
I guess it could be due to the impression of a larger space when outdoors, so over longer distances it seems more accurate (maybe indoors the inaccuracy is more noticeable)... imho, the benchmark for accuracy in both indoors and outdoors for such blasters means you can aim and hit a target the size of a dinner plate at 50ft consistently without the foam dart ever swerving or curving (i've not seen any stock versions using stock foam darts ever achieving that type of accuracy anyways).
Hi, thanks for the reply, I think that because it it's outdoors it seems more accurate like you say. I went outside and tried hitting a tree from around 10m away with a slight breeze and only a tiny amount hit the tree, which is a very thick one. I live in NZ and I have read some articles that's AUS and NZ models dont have as much range as the US ones. I also got a Vortex Lumitron and I could hit the tree by aiming to the side. Do you think i should exchange the retaliator for the Praxis ( as I want a stock version of the lumitron. Thanks

DeleteWell, blasters like the Retaliator usually need to be modded to achieve longer ranges and customized foam darts for higher accuracy... i guess if you were to use blasters in stock condition, the Vortex blasters do get slightly better ranges and accuracy, so you could consider them (though ammo compatibility can be an issue in Nerf games 'cos majority of players still prefer to use foam dart blasters).

DeleteWhistler foam darts cannot be used in clip-fed N-Strike or Elite blasters (like the Retaliator). Those type of blasters are designed to use only narrow tipped foam darts (whistler foam darts are wide tipped and will cause jams in those blasters).
Hi. I was wondering if you know wether this rifle has the same problem with breaking the "end" of the plunger, requiring it to be padded to survive extended use. Or can I just play with this new one without waiting for it to break?

DeleteThe Retaliator uses a direct plunger system, which is different from the reverse plunger system in a Recon... in direct plunger systems, there is no repeated impacts on the back of a plunger tube, hence no issue with punching a hole through the back.
Instead, a direct plunger system transfers the impacts to the front of the plunger, so there may still be breakage in the front section and parts if its air restrictors are removed and the blaster is dry fired too often.

I got the retaliator! However, the first day i got it, it had some jamming issues. It would always jam at least once each time a clip is fed. I waited a second day and through 10 darts it jammed THREE times. did i get a bad unit or am i doing soemthing wrong?

DeleteTo use the blaster properly, make sure the foam darts are not bent, damaged or worn out, as those will cause jams.
Priming technique is important too. You have to pull the priming slide back fully, then push it forward completely before firing... if you don't prime it properly, the foam dart will half-chamber and cause jams.
If your foam darts are in perfect condition and you practice good priming technique, and it still jams frequently... then you probably got a faulty unit. Just exchange it at the store for a new working set.

ReplyDeleteMy Retaliator has sub-par accuracy. It is even worse than my Recon's! The accuracy varies so much, it can hit dead on one shot, then go 3-4 feet to the right the next shot. Do you have any ideas as to why this is happening? I have not modded it at all.

DeleteCould be the foam darts are abit worn out or bent? I guess as the Retaliator has more stock power and range, any imperfections or faults in the foam darts might probably tend to show more.
Recons have lower stock power and range, so that might be why inconsistent foam dart accuracy are abit less noticeable.
My retaliator is having jamming problems that occur when I begin to "pull forward" on the cocking mechanism.I pulled back fully, then when I pull up, it stops about half way up, causing me to have to slide back the cocking mechanism 1-5 times extra in order to clear up the jam. Does anyone have a suggestion for fixing this problem? I am planning on exchanging the retaliator for a new one. Would this be the correct course of action?

DeleteLooks like either the bolt lock or some other internal parts in the blaster are faulty or mis-aligned.
I guess you could open up the casing and try to troubleshoot the issue... or just save the hassle and exchange it at the store for a new working unit.
I am trying to decide whether to buy the Retaliator or save my money and buy something else. What should I do?

DeleteThe Retaliator is a good blaster to get... alternatively if you have a slightly higher budget, get the Rampage as it has more ammo capacity, pump action foregrip and slam-fire mode.
Can the Retalitor fit with other darts example Velcro Darts or Suction cup darts or only Streamline darts?

This gun is epic! It is way better than the Recon. Just one question: Is there any other difference in the internals other than the plunger system?

DeleteThe Retaliator can be used with the longshot barrel extension... but the range would tend to drop around 15-20% due to the foam dart bumping about against the extra barrel walls.
$50+ for this gun on Amazon.com and I have to wait for it to ship? I don't know whether should I just get it from Toys R' Us @$59.90 or online. Any opinions?

DeleteI'm not a fan of flywheel blasters due to their buzzing noise and lack of tactile feel, and the Stockade has limited ammo capacity which requires additional time to reload during games.
The Retaliator has the improved direct spring plunger system, its clip system allows ammo capacity to be expanded and reloading it with clips is much faster too.

DeleteIf comparing between those 2 blasters and if the price difference isn't an issue, the Rampage works out better feature-wise... it uses a pump-action fore grip, has slam-fire mode and comes with a higher ammo capacity drum magazine.

i got this gun last night and honestly it sucks! it keeps getting jammed and wont fire and it bends the darts and rips them. this is the worst nerf product ive ever owned.

DeleteJamming issues are usually due to user priming practices... you have to make sure it is primed fully back and then fully forward to properly chamber each foam dart before firing... don't just prime it half way or 3/4 way, as that will always result in jams.
If you are priming it properly and it still jams alot, then you probably got a faulty set... then just exchange it at the store for a new working unit.

ReplyDeleteI bought my nerf retaliator from Toysrus Malaysia but the blaster paint job is different, there is no white stripe above the nerf logo near the clip. Is it the latest version or older, or maybe something else?

DeleteDid you buy the "Sonic Ice" version of the Retaliator? That version is an alternative variant and has a translucent blue casing (can see though into the internals) and it doesn't have the white stripe.
About the retaliator's paintjob, my retaliator is the normal retaliator. The paintjob of the stock and barrel is normal but the main pistol is different, it has no stripe above the nerf logo and the handle for the trigger has no silver colour on it. My retaliator is blue and not transparent. I was wondering if it's fake or is it an old version?

DeleteWell, since you bought it from Toys R Us, it shouldn't be a fake/pirated version... so i guess it could just be a new production batch of Retaliators with slightly different paintwork.
oh by the way, I'm going for a trip and can I put the retaliator on my luggage or will the security will check it? and for my darts, can I put it in my bag?

DeleteIf you are taking a flight, then there is usually no issues with packing the blaster in luggage, if they do want to check it they'll see its just a toy anyways.
The foam darts you can put into carry on bag, but if the airlines doesn't allow just put it in your luggage.
If in doubt, always check with the airlines on their rules and regulations.
Is there sonic ice retaliator left in sg? I went around the island with no luck finding one. Do you think they will restock? Or should i just get the stock version?

DeleteEither blaster installed with a barrel attachment will have more consistent/accurate shots, but the overall range would tend to decrease due to the foam darts bumping against the barrel walls.
I have a XD Retaliator and it damages my darts. Do all Retaliators do this? Do you know how to stop this?

DeleteThat shouldn't happen... if you prime it properly by pulling back the priming handle fully and pushing it forward fully, it will not damage the foam darts.
Its usually when users rush and don't prime it properly, thats why the foam darts get mis-aligned and get damaged.
Using foam darts that are worn out or already bent increase the chances of further damage, only use foam darts that are still in good condition.
The first time I fired the blaster, it had damaged the dart. I didn't rush on the prime. My friend had a Retaliator and it damaged the darts too.

DeleteIn that case, i can't help much... i have probably fired thousands of shots from various Retaliators over the course of many local Nerf games over the years and they all work properly, none have damaged foam darts if primed and fired properly.

DeleteI had "K" code darts in the blaster. Zombiestrike darts were not damaged, and they are "A" code. I used "W" code elite and elite suction darts and both were damaged.
