Nerf Maverick REV-6 - Review!

I shall now review the basic foundation of all Nerf collections...

The Nerf Maverick REV-6!

The Nerf Maverick features a 6 dart rotating cylinder with flip-open loading action, pull back mechanism and auto advancing barrel. It is packaged with 6 micro foam darts, and is also compatible with most Nerf foam darts.

Average range is around 25-30ft.

With enough practice, an experienced Nerfer can fire off all six shots in quick succession quite accurately. This is the ultimate Nerf sidearm!

  1. Hello SG Nerf...
I was wondering, could you do a review on the Nite Finder EX-3 NERF gun?

    ReplyDelete
  2. The NERF Maverick gun was used as a design for the 2006 release Transformers Classics Megatron.

  3. hey i got my nerf maverick today and done both mods but i was wondering if ill need padding to stop the plunger exploding? if so what would you suggest?

    ReplyDelete
  4. kanebrown3,

To protect the plunger from repeated impacts, you can try using soft foam/rubber padding to be placed within the plunger base.

Check out an example of suitable soft foam/rubber padding over at my Recon Mod Guide:

  5. Well, I own the Maverick for almost 2 years. It was my very first gun. It's a must have. It's very good for pining someone down.

I would recommend that you rest your wrist on your right waist(if you're right handed, or else rest it on your left waist) and rest your left hand on the cocker. Then, yank away... But press the trigger only for a split second, or else your Maverick will make a sickening sound which will damage it, and most likely, the next shot will be jammed.

Another reloading tip is to shoot twice to pin that guy down. And then, slot a dart into the 3 o'clock(when you're holding it) hole. Then, your loaded with 5 darts.

And remember, its not a rifle. Its a pistol(or revolver as the name says) with a heavy front. So, never ever hold the gun like the police do by holding it with 2 hands. Put it on your waist instead.

Plus, I highly discourage you to put any accessories on the tactical rail because it'll be a damn hindrance when you'r reloading it.

Thats all I have to say.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh and I just found out that when you're using a Maverick to do battle with a Vulcan...run away or bring your own ammo. Because whistler darts will jam the gun. It can be fired but with less range(7 feet!?!?!?!?!?) Not only that but the whistler dart will sometimes pop up from the barrelnot completely, but the head will just stick out. Then the gun can't be rotated to fire. The dart which you were trying to fire will either:

Jam and stay in the barrel

Dart's head will be halfway out(then you'll have to put 2 darts back properly)

    Have less range(15 feet?)

Another trick. When you're fighting against a Vulcan,(heh heh heh ;D)use streamlines. The guy using the vulcan will run out of ammo fast due to the high RoF. And, the Vulcan can't fire streamlines as far as I know(Warhahahahhaha)

  7. In a shopping mall,I found a Maverick (Clear) and a Nite Finder (Clear). Which one should I get:

    1. Performance-Wise (How far it fires, how does it hurt, etc)
    2. Appearance-Wise (Which one looks cooler)
    3. Modification-Wise (Which one is easier to mod)
    4. Price-wise (Which one is cheaper?)

    Please reply by Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Musta,

Both perform around the same in stock condition +/- a few ft.

Which one looks cooler? Depends on your personal preference.

The Nite Finder is easier to mod and will usually get better range improvements after modding.

But the Nite Finder is a manual single dart reload blaster so it has a slower rate-of-fire, compared to the Maverick's 6-dart rotating barrel system.

Price-wise the Nite Finder is generally cheaper.

  9. Hey, SGNerf, this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVKnF26qFFM

If you watch closely, at 2:07, the user uses 2 Maverick, but fires 2 or 3 darts without cocking on one gun! How's that possible? Or is that just a camera trick?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Musta,

It's done by video editing, very easy to create in most good video editing programs. :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Owhhh.... I tot I could try that trick....

  12. Heyheyheyheyheyhey, SG Nerf,

I read that clear plastic are less tough than colored plastic. Is this true? So if it is true, Clear Series NERF guns are much more prone to be broken compared to colored guns? Thx

    ReplyDelete
  13. Musta,

Well, i've compared the durability of both the clear and coloured plastics and so far, i find both to be quite similar.

The clear plastic might seem abit thinner, but i guess its the look of the clear plastic that gives that impression.

  14. Another question!!! *Raises Hand* I'm sorry for all those questions, but, can foam darts be loaded from behind the barrel, you know, like a real revolver?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Musta,

Nope, the foam darts have to be loaded via the front of the rotating barrel.

    ReplyDelete
  16. *WARNING*

I bought a new Maverick, test fired it a few times, and I carried out the 'FULL BARREL FLIP-OUT MOD'. It went well, but...

THE SPRING THAT KEEPS THE PART THAT KEEPS THE PLUNGER IN COCKED POSITION IS MISSING!!!

What would you suggest for a substitute? can the spring be found in stores? or how can I make one!? Please reply ASAP!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Musta,

For a replacement plunger catch spring, you can try using the small springs from ballpoint pens.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks!!! I cried. One more question. Is it advisable to spin the barrel manually while the barrel is in place? You know, the "KAKAKAKAKAKAKAK" sound. Is that an OK sound?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Musta,

Its not a good idea to spin the Maverick's barrel when it is in place, if that is done too often, the internal rotation mechanism will wear out eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks. (OMG!!! I've done it soooo many times!!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Barrel Trouble

Help! One of the barrel in my Maverick REV-6 won't accept darts! And by that, I mean there's just something inside the barrel that JUST HAFTA spring out the dart. It's like, a component, like a spring is loose from position inside..... There's no spring stuck inside, but the dart I inserted into that barrel will just spring out of place.... That makes the barrel stuck when it's spinning, which in turn, render the gun unusable. what should I do?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Musta,

Seems like either something else is stuck in the barrel or the plastic barrel post is misaligned, you will have to open it up to troubleshoot on your own.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi SG Nerf. I was wondering, can I use your pics? Cuz, I kinda threw my box away, and I need the box picture as well. And yes, I will give you credit for the pics. Oh and, how about the other gun pics to? Please reply.

You can link to the photos, just make sure you include the credit to this blog site.

  25. Ok. No problemo... Check it out at asianerf.blogspot.com. I just thought of running 1 blog by myself too. Thanks for inspiring me. Though it is quite incomplete

    ReplyDelete
  26. If i put a VERY small layer of Krazy glue around the pins that hold the rod used to pull back the plunger just to re-inforce it so it lasts a little longer would it make the 2 little pins on the inside of the priming handle take longer before they snap off? i just want it to last a little longer. will it help at all?

PS this is NOT expected to work long term. this is a little reinforcement to make it last longer.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oscar,

Well, i guess you can try it out and post up your findings if it works well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey SGNerf, over the years I bought a couple of Mavericks, but both of them broke down after 8-10 months (catch plate wore down). I don't know if I'm just unlucky, does this happen for any of yours too?

@Musta: Have you done AR removal for your Maverick? If not and you can load the barrel properly, but afterwards the barrel pops the dart out, it's likely you have a hyperactive AR spring (happened on one of mine too)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Joshua D,

I've not encountered that issue before in my Mavericks, but then again i don't use them much in Nerf games anyways, so the wear and tear in them are quite minimal.

I guess the catch plate is a component that will wear out over time so its something that'll need to be repaired or replaced eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  30. im gonna buy another one and put my clear cylender in it

    ReplyDelete
  31. HI I was wondering If moding the cylinder to come futher out makes the gun break earlier

    ReplyDelete
  32. tom257,

That mod should be okay, just make sure its done properly.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dear SGNerf,

Could you PLEASE make a full mod tutorial of the Maverick in Mod Works? And what is a catch plate anyway?

    @ Joshua D.

Nope, haven't done the mod yet. Can't risk it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Musta,

Although i have modded Mavericks before (AR removal, O-ring and Spring replacement etc), i don't plan to spend time making a mod guide for the Maverick as the overall performance improvements after modding is so small its basically not worth the effort.

Honestly, if you want to mod your Maverick, just refer to all the numerous Maverick mod tutorials already posted online.

don`t know where to comment but my
maverick suction dart`s head was detached from the foam. What should i do? What should i use?

  36. fadullah,

Just use some general purpose or UHU glue to attach the tip back on the foam.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I took a sprin from the buzz bee rapid fire, and it seems to only of increased the range a bit...i have done the AR removal...is there any point keeping the spring in?

    ReplyDelete
  38. jaykoknight,

Well, you'll notice that air flow from the plunger to rotating barrel in the Maverick is not a completely sealed connection, so there are gaps which the air will leak out.

That explains the less significant gains even when stronger springs are used. You could try increasing the plunger to barrel seal by installing a suitable sized o-ring or rubber washer with lube between them to try to get a more efficient air seal.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My maverick keeps jamming and the suction dart head only comes out sometimes. and then i load in six bullets but after shooting 5, when i reload and shoot, air comes out. i have to reload and shoot a few times before it comes to the remaining bullet. Please help!

    ReplyDelete
  40. j and j,

Your blaster rotation mechanism is not working properly, its probably worn out so you'll need to replace it with a new one.

If its a new unit, then just exchange it at the store for a new working unit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. can this use the recon barrel?

    ReplyDelete
  42. fc5ad2f0-ccd6-11e0-ae87-000bcdcb471e,

Nope, the Nerf Maverick does not have a front barrel attachment point.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I wish you could load the darts from the back of the barrel rather than in front, like you would in a real six-shooter. Part of the charm of the Barrel Break is how you load it like you would a double-barreled shotgun - if you just put the darts down the front of the barrel it wouldn't be half as fun. That's not really a practical suggestion for the maverick, though, given the way the firing mechanism is designed.

Another 2 things I really want with the Maverick are to have that barrel-release button on the other side so you can release the barrel using your right index finger. The button on the left is way too far away for the right thumb to reach and you need to use your left hand. As it is, if you held the gun in your left hand you could release the barrel smoothly using your left index finger, but right-handers are out of luck! The second thing I want is for the tactical rail to be further forward on the main gun body, rather than on the cocking mechanism. The way it's designed now, putting anything on the rail interferes with the cocking of the gun.

Despite these faults, it's a wonderful gun, and has arguably the most comfortable grip I've had on a Nerf gun - it just melts into your hand. It's annoying that I can't open the barrel with the hand I'm gripping it with (especially when the Barrel Break has the release on both sides of the gun to cater for both left and right handers), and annoying that I really can't put anything on the tactical rail, but these don't change the fact that it's a wonderful gun to hold and fire.

    SG Nerf,

Does it actually help if you use the sights on the Maveric, if not, why do they even put a sight on it? Also would an attachable sight be more effective?

    ReplyDelete
  45. blackraine1,

I guess it just provides an aiming point for reference, accuracy still depends on the user.

The additional sight accessories are just to offer alternative aiming points.

  46. i modded my Nerf Mavericks and used them in a couple of games, they worked awesome, shot 40 feet easy.

however, just this past weekend i lent them to my brother in law so he could use them in our monthly Nerf game since i had work and he told me that they werent performing as well as they were when i was using it. as mentioned when i shot them with all three mods (penny, barrel drop and air restrictor) they shot approx 40 feet. but when he was using them they would reach around 10 feet max, when they shot at all. I was expecting this for one of my Mavericks, the one i call Biggs, since that was already acting up before i lent it to him, but he told me that even Wedge, the other Maverick which was working great, was acting up too.

what do i do? could i have screwed up the internals somehow? i got them back and took them apart and i honestly dont know whats wrong. everything was put back the way it should and i even put plumbers tape under the O-ring in the plunger tube to help the air seal, and it did, though my Mavs still wont fire, help please? if i cant fix Wedge and Biggs i am left without a Nerf gun and will have to buy a new one and just salvage what parts i can from the two Mavs, help please :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. Victor LayugJan,

There could be a possibility that the gap between the plunger exit and the turret/barrels somehow widened after some usage, so too much air is escaping there which affects performance.

Try cutting a thin layer of craft foam into a ring shaped foam washer, then attach it between the plunger and turret to see if it can help reduce or eliminate that gap.

    ReplyDelete
  48. that actually sounds like a good idea. i'll try that. right now i've taken them apart since i plan to paint them but i'll definitely do that. thanks SGnerf! i'll let you know how it works!

    1. Rennis,

  57. When i fire my maverick the plunger would not go back to its original position and will only go half way back is that the problem with the spring that is not powerful enough or is it the plunger not lubed enough to easily go back to its original position?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous,

Could be the spring is somehow weakened or misaligned, or the plunger o-ring is out of shape. It could also be due to the grease drying up in the plunger (as you mentioned) and hence creating too much resistance too.

I guess, you'll have to open up the casing to troubleshoot the issue.

      Delete
    2. Thanks! I found out that i need more grease for the plunger tube. Also i have a problem with my barrel where it would not turn fully in time for the gun to fire meaning that the dart wont come out. Is there any way of fixing the rotatory mech so the barrel is able to rotate at the right time??

      Delete
    3. Anonymous,

Check the rotary mechanism, its the small cylinder with notches behind the rotating barrel... you can actually test it when the casing is open (just remove the main spring to facilitate easier testing).

If its moving slowly, try applying some grease to it... but if its broken then there isn't much you can do, have to get a new blaster.
