Nerf Barricade RV-10 - Review!

Go semi-auto with the Nerf Barricade RV-10!

This pistol-sized blaster uses a flywheel powered system to launch foam darts in semi-auto. It features 2 spinning flywheels positioned in a vertical layout with a 10-dart revolving barrel.

The Barricade requires 3 x AA batteries (sold separately) to operate. Simply engage the On/Off switch and the flywheels start spinning.

Every trigger pull fires one shot in a semi-auto sequence, a "dart pusher" behind the barrel pushes a foam dart in between the 2 spinning flywheels, then the flywheels will catch the tip of the foam dart and "throw" it out of the barrel. It operates on a similar principle to a tennis ball launcher.

Unlike the Maverick, the Barricade's barrel does not flip out for dart loading, it is reloaded by manually rotating the barrels and loading in the foam darts individually.

The Barricade has a top tactical rail and shoulder stock attachment point which are compatible with most N-Strike blaster accessories.

It is packaged with 10 x Sonic Darts. Note that Streamline darts don't work as well in the Barricade as their tips are too narrow to allow for a proper launch grip between the 2 flywheels.

Average stock range is around 25-30ft.

Available at Toys R Us and most major dept stores in Singapore. Retail Price: SGD$34.90.

  2. Kind of noisy. Do you find it noisy?
But i like the size and the way it is adaptable to other accessories

  3. jonadlys,

Personally, i find it very noisy!

One of the priority mods i'm currently doing for it are quieter motors. :)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wouldn't it be easier to rewire it such that the trigger is the on switch for the motor?

The safety is the master on/off and each trigger pull triggers the flywheels... prob an idea i'll want to try when i get mine...

    ReplyDelete
  5. its a Nerf copy of the Tommy 12 but holds less darts and cost more.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Will this shoot any kind of dart? STreamline Whistler, Suction?

    ReplyDelete
  7. The Buzz Bee Tommy 20 is a fly wheel gun, and it is extremely inaccurate. I imagine that this is also extremely inaccurate?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Nerf U.S.A,

The Barricade can fire most Nerf foam darts.

But as mentioned in my review, streamline darts don't work as well because their tips are too narrow to allow for a proper launch grip between the 2 flywheels.

A solution is to apply e-tape around the flywheels so that the wheels are thicker in diameter, hence creating a better grip on streamline darts.

    ReplyDelete
  9. htrfghg,

Well, i have to say that Nerf has definitely enhanced the performance of their flywheel system compared to other brand flywheel blasters like the Buzz Bee Tommy 20.

From my testing of it so far, the Barricade's vertical flywheel system layout seems to help reduce the left/right swerving dart shots that commonly occur in the Tommy 20, so the shots fired from the Barricade are actually much more consistent and accurate.

  13. A quick Question...

What is the difference between reverse plunger and direct plunger??? Which is better?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Zack,

Reverse plungers are basically plungers where the plunger rod is fixed with the bolt, and its the the outer plunger casing that moves to and fro.

They are generally smaller in air volume and due to the reversed design, have a fair bit more deadspace (ie. plunger does not compress all the air fully).

This combination of smaller air volume and deadspace contribute to its limitations in performance improvements when modded.

Examples of reverse plungers in Nerf blasters are: Recon, Raider, Deploy, Longstrike etc.

Direct plungers are standard plunger designs that have a plunger rod with a plunger tip and o-ring which move to and fro within a plunger casing.

This design tends to feature larger air volumes with very little deadspace, as the plunger rod can compress all the air in the plunger.

Thats why direct plunger blasters can achieve much more significant power improvements when modded.

Examples of direct plungers in Nerf blasters are: Longshot, Nite Finder, Stampede etc.

  15. Wow. I'm going to singapore soon and i'm only allowed to get one nerf gun. I cant decide between the alpha trooper, barricade and barrel break. I alrady hav a longshot and maverick. What would you pick coz i'm having a lot of trouble deciding!

    ReplyDelete
  16. hey Devilarm999,
im from Singapore so i kinda know the stock here in Sg.So far we do not have the Alpha Trooper nor the Barricade yet.SG Nerf got to review on the Barricade cuz he got it overseas.sorry to rain on your parade.though there are other guns on sale (and maybe discounts too)like Deploy(both normal and transparent),Spectre,LongStrike, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Actually zul I'm coming in a few months so the guns should be out. What whould you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  18. okay then..check SG Nerf's blog for updates then.but so far Stampede's the best.and it depends on what kinda gun you want and what kinda nerf games you play.so try to find the most suitable gun for your gameplay.

    ReplyDelete
  19. SG Nerf, does it work well with Spectre Stock? :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. For all of those people that posted that you wanted the motors to only spin when you pull the trigger... do yourself a favor and DON'T. Those motors still will need a second to get to full speed before the dart come into contact with them, so you will only hamper the performance of the gun with that mod.

    ReplyDelete
  21. jonadlysm

Yes, the Spectre's folding shoulder stock can be attached to the Barricade.

    ReplyDelete
  22. How would you reload this?

Is there a barrel release button like on the maverick?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tony,

It does not have a barrel release button to "flip-out" the barrel.

The barrel is fixed and users simply rotate the barrel manually to access the empty ammo slots in order to load in individual foam darts. Similar to how the Nerf Furyfire is reloaded.

    ReplyDelete
  24. SG Nerf, then if you keep on turning the barrel, then won't it like break or something? I dunno, I own a Maverick and I never dare to turn the barrel in case it damages the gun... it's expensive

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nerf Meagafan,

For the Nerf Barricade, its designed to be loaded that way, so its safe to turn the barrels manually.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Have you tried putting a couple of 3.7v batteries or 4xAA instead of 3xAA in it yet?

I hope this comes to the UK soon :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. burntcustard,

So far, i've tested with 2 x TrustFire 14500 rechargeable batteries at full charge running at 8.4V and i measured an average range of around 45-50ft with the Sonic darts, nice improvement with just a simple battery swap.

I've also tested it with 3 x TrustFire 14500 rechargeable batteries at full charge running at 12.6V but then the motors simply refused to spin.... so i guess that voltage was way to high for the stock motors to handle.

    ReplyDelete
  28. dear sgnerf

would u mind making a review of the element xd-6 ?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Devilarm999: I don't know about where you live, but at least where I am, in the States, we've already got the Alpha Trooper. No Barrel Breaks or Barricades yet, however.

Also, SG, wouldn't having the flywheels only operate when you pulled the trigger actually drain the batteries faster, especially firing in rapid succession? Obviously, that would be better than having them constantly running for a while, but... I can't think of a coherent way to end this thought. You get what I mean though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. SG Nerf will the nerf barricade rv-10 come out in the nerf clear series?

    ReplyDelete
  31. nerf depot,

Well, i used to have a few Nerf Element EX-6 sets but have since traded them away.

They are basically like Nite Finders and perform similarly, other than that it's just a different shell.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Da Nerf Dude,

So far, i've not heard of any announcement of any clear series version of the Barricade.

    ReplyDelete
  33. how do you get it so early and can i order one through you guy, i was also wondering, does it fit in the tactical vest

    ReplyDelete
  34. Looks nice, but way to noisy. I seriously hate the idea of having a Nerf gun that uses the flywheels- that's a Buzzbee thing. I like the fact that it is semi-automatic though! By the way please check out my blog on Nerf, which I hope to grow at: www.nerfstuffisawesome.blogspot.com

    Thanks a million!

    ReplyDelete
  35. thanks for the answer
but do they also have dp ?(direct plunger)

Yes, the Nerf Element is using a direct plunger system, similar to the Nerf Nite Finder.

I live on the East side of Singapore so it would be great if you could find one near here. Also could you find out the prices just in case. That would be a tremendous help.

And any suggestions on what add ons and additions for my Nerf collection should have is greatly appreciated.

You can find the current list of Nerf blasters available in local stores along with their retail prices at the "Singapore Nerf Stock List" link at the top left hand corner of this site.

    Here is a direct link:

    http://sgnerf.blogspot.com/2009/03/latest-nerf-store-stock.html

Just go to the major dept stores near your area and check their toy sections, most of them should have a good selection of Nerf blasters and accessories.

As for recommendations for additions to your Nerf collection, visit the NerfSG forum (www.nerfsg.com) and join in the discussions there.

  44. hi, I think that pressure switch was activated by sliding the on/off switch onto it, it was probably not there for modders to use

    ReplyDelete
  45. wanna-be,

I think you meant to post your comment at the Barricade Mod Guide. :)

Anyways, yes, the pressure switch shown in my Barricade Mod Guide is for the On/Off switch.

Of course its not meant for modders to use... but its good that modders don't have to go out and buy another pressure switch 'cos they can just use the existing one already in the blaster, saves all the hassle and cost to get a new pressure switch. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. as a personal opinion, would you say that dual wielding barricades would be better or worse than using a single stampede. (given that both have been modded as in your mod guides). I'm just sorta on the edge, and insight from someone who has used both would really help.

    ReplyDelete
  47. SG Nerf, thanks for the review, it seems like your sight is one of the best to find out what's coming out from Nerf in advance.

I was wondering how bulky the Barricade is? I'd have to imagine that the cylinder would have to be larger then the Maverick. Do you think it would be a problem to fit it into a holster designed for a maverick?

    ReplyDelete
  48. HiIm from hong kong and am a big fan of nerf and just found out that there is another new gun coming out called the nerf dart tag 20 automatic blaster.

u can find it on urban taggers .com

    ReplyDelete
  49. Joseph,

It depends on your gameplay style and the game scenario.

The Stampede has further range after modding and the option of changing clips and drum mags quickly, so its ammo capacity can last much longer in Nerf games.

The Barricade has good range after modding too, but it is limited to only 10 shots before it has to be manually reloaded dart-by-dart, but it is the advantage of being more compact than the Stampede and can be holstered.

So far, the most efficient combination i've tested during Nerf games is using the Stampede as a main blaster and the Barricade holstered as a sidearm.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Justin,

Yes, the Barricade is definitely larger in dimensions to the Maverick, its more like the Furyfire (without the pump grip).

You'll have to use larger holsters to carry a Nerf Barricade.

    ReplyDelete

Speaking of, would it be possible to modify it to belt-feed instead of the revolver chamber? Just a thought.
Though I am wondering why they still haven't released it...

    ReplyDelete
  56. The Engineer,

Modify it to be belt-feed instead of the revolver chamber?

I guess its possible, just need abit of custom work. Do post up your results if you manage to successfully do it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi, I'm from Australia and have seen Barricade RV-10's as early as the 22nd of November. Has the store released it early?

    ReplyDelete
  58. supr_g33k_7120,

Well, new Nerf blasters can be released in different countries at different times so it's possible they launch earlier in some places.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Is there anyway to make it quieter? I've heard you put e tape on the flywheels or something like that. But wouldn't kind of defeat the purpose of the flywheels?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Aidan,

Do the trigger activated power on mod, install quieter aftermarkeet motors, add sound absorbing foam material within the casing etc... various methods can be used to reduce the noise, but it's still inherently a rather noisy blaster.

The "tape around the flywheels" mod is not to reduce noise, it is to narrow the gap between the flywheel to enable them to fire foam darts with narrow tips.

I am debating whether to buy 2 Barricades, or a magstrike with 2 clips and buy these later, we mainly host nerf wars in a large building with many rooms, doors and long halls. What do you recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  62. nerfboyz,

I would recommend 2 x Nerf Barricades, 'cos you'll be able to fire 20 shots without requiring any clip reloading.

The Magstrike with 2 clips can also be used too, but you'll have to do the enhanced air capacity mod so that you can fire 2 clips before needed to pump it up again (so that it'll at least match the 2 x Barricades in shot efficiency):

The link you posted is for M'sia, not for SG.

In SG, most of the major dept stores are running their own Christmas promos so you can find various discounts, just have to shop around for the best deals.

Check at the NerfSG forum "Sales & Discounts Field Report" thread for the latest info.

    ReplyDelete
  67. would you recommend this? by the way, this defiantly isn't good for stealth missions. lol. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Jason,

Sure... it works well for the majority of indoor and outdoor Nerf games (where noise isn't an issue and everyone is running around blasters a-blazin' anyways).

If you are concerned about "stealth", then just use a normal spring plunger powered blaster instead.

    Thanks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Marcus7,

Just fully open the jam door/access hatch at the top of the blaster, then you can pull the trigger to rotate the barrels freely to load foam darts (without the "dart pusher" activating).

  78. SG nerf,
i've just got the barricade today and all the batteries are in, it turns on and fires normally, but the trigger is 'jamming' when I fire. I have to pull 3 or 4 times before it fires another dart.is this natural? If so then what could I do about it?
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  79. Connor,

Sounds like you might have gotten a faulty unit, its not supposed to jam in such a way.

Perhaps you could just exchange it for a new working unit at the store.

    ReplyDelete
  80. SG nerf, barricade or longstrike? What situations are each of them best in? Does the barricade fit in the holster on the tactical vest?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Devon,

The Barricade is a true semi-auto blaster and from experience, it beats the Longstrike in pretty much every Nerf game situation.

Unfortunately, its too large to fit into the holster in the Nerf tactical vest.

The Longstrike is nice for display though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. SG Nerf, I have a Scout IX-3, and if I prime it normally, when I push the cocking mechanism forward even slightly hard, the bullet shoots out. I have to pull it back, let go, then gently push it forward. Also, after I have done this, if I point the blaster up, the cock falls back to the end of the gun. Do you know how I can fix this? (I was going to do this on the review for the scout, but I couldn't find it and I'm buying a barricade anyway).

    ReplyDelete
  83. Kaybe,

Looks like your Scout IX-3 has some worn out or mis-aligned parts, or maybe the priming return spring somehow got unhinged, you'll just have to open it up to check whats wrong and try to fix it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. SG Nerf..
Is the Barricade the Fastest Firing Nerf blaster??

    ReplyDelete
  85. Nerf IsReallycool,

Well... i guess it just depends on you, 'cos it basically fires as fast as you can repeatedly pull the trigger. :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. I have the same problem as Connor, with the trigger jamming. I have already exchanged it for a new unit and they both do the same thing. I'm not sure why my barricades are'nt working.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Devon,

The trigger jams usually when it is not pulled and released completely (ie. if the trigger is only pulled halfway and let go), so the system gets stuck.

This seems to be due to the trigger lock components behind the trigger which sometimes tends to cause issues.

You can solve it by removing the trigger lock components, check out how its done at Step 4 of this Barricade Mod Guide:

    http://modworks.blogspot.com/2010/12/nerf-barricade-clip-conversion-mod.html

    ReplyDelete
  88. Why does here says that it cost $29.90 while the stock list says that it cost $34.90?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Low,

Thanks for reminding me... the previous retail price when it was launched initially at Toys R Us in 2010 was at SGD$29.90, but once it became available at all the major dept stores in 2011, the retail price was raised to SGD$34.90.

I have updated the price info on this review.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I bought the barricade arealdy but i dun noe where to find the tactical rail accessories any suggestion where to buy?

    ReplyDelete
  96. NerfForLife,

Tactical rail accessories are usually packaged with other N-Strike blasters or mission kits, so you'll have to buy them separately to get the compatible accessories.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm in the market for a new Nerf gun for Humans vs Zombies coming up soon. I was thinking about double-wielding Barricades for this, as I believe not having to reload while being stalked or surrounded provides a great advantage. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Darkchaos665,

Sure, the Nerf Barricade would suit your usage, just abit noisier when the motors are on. :)

    ReplyDelete
  99. mbryanawesome,

If the jam door is open, the circuit is cut off and the motors will not spin, hence it'll not be using any battery power in that particular state.

  107. Hi to all you Nerf modyfiers, I have seen all your ideas of replacing the bateries and putting tape round the rotating drums. Have you considered inserting something into the dart to enlarge it from within and that way it saves having to prise the front apart and causing more work than is neccesary. I have opted for large Drinking straws of 8mm which are cut to length and lightly glued into stop it from slipping out. I have eperimented with 6mm straws but the 8mm enlarges the dart sufficiently to be gripped and pushed out. I have also tried inserting a 6.5mm Steel Ball Bearing but it tends to go a great deal further but also hits a whole lot harder, Ouch! UK.
