The Nerf Recon features a modular component design, users can swap the various parts to customize it to fit any tactical situation.
It's loading/unloading and manual bolt action firing mechanisms are similar to the Nerf Longshot, but in a more compact scale with the bolt slider situated on top instead. Both the Nerf Recon and Longshot can utilize the same parts and tactical attachments. In addition, both use the same 6-dart magazines and are only compatible with streamline foam darts.
The Nerf Recon package also includes an adjustable ladder sight to aid in aiming, and a tactical targeting laser module which can switch between red-beam spotlight or focused red-dot targeting (requires 2 x AAA batteries).
The average firing range of the Nerf Recon is similar to the Nerf Longshot at around 25-30 ft.
Note that the Nerf Recon is packaged with only 1 x 6-dart magazine, it can hold a spare magazine in its butt stock but you'll have to purchase that separately.

i bought 1 of this and i put the barrel on. the ammo only went like 10-20 ft

ReplyDeleteMaybe you got a faulty unit? Some units could have weaker seals or springs. If possible, it could be a good idea to return to the store and exchange for another one.

I've checked and the Recon shoulder stock cannot fit the Raider drum magazine, due to insufficient space between the magazine holder and the handle of the Recon.

ReplyDeleteI have a Nite Finder and a Maverick, and I think it's time to move on to a bigger gun. I have been thinking about getting the Recon, but the Longshot also seems good, although too big. Which one would you recommend? Are there any other great guns I'm missing out? The Vulcan and the Raider seem too big. I want something more simple, that can shoot beyond 40 ft. If I mod the Recon, will it reach further than that?

Well, in stock version, Longshots, Raiders and Recons have similiar range (around 25-30 ft).
ReplyDeleteIn terms of mod potential... it'll really depend on your gamestyle.
For distance, it will be the Longshot, modded with AR removal, stronger springs, reinforcements etc. One of the reasons is because its plunger system has almost twice the air capacity of Recon and Raider plungers. Its possible for well modded Longshots to achieve up to 90-100 ft ranges.
For high Rate-of-Fire (RoF), it will be the Raider, with it's 35-dart drum magazine, it can usually outlast all other blasters in games. Being able to keep firing while others are busy reloading magazines is a very crucial advantage in games. In addition, its Slam-Fire mode allows users to rain down a constant barrage of shots on opponents, pinning them down... something the Longshot and Recon cannot do. Its possible for well modded Raiders to achieve up to 60-70 ft ranges.
For Compact form-factor, it'll be the Recon. Because of its modular design, it can be used just as a pistol, which makes it easier to maneuver around with. Modded ranges are around the same as the Raider (they share similiar internals).

ReplyDeleteMost nerf stock blasters usually need to be aimed at an elevated angle, so that darts fly in a lob trajectory (at least to reach the average stated stock range on the box).
Though once modded, the aiming points become much flatter, straighter and more direct. :)
i got a recons and modded it. after firing a couple shots, the plengers back blew open and im not sure how this happened>
ReplyDeleteIf you removed the air restricter (AR) in your Recon's bolt, then there is no more air buffering system to cushion the plunger on bolt impact.
ReplyDeleteWithout adequate plunger padding, repeated impacts would eventually crack or punch a hole through the base of the plunger.

ReplyDeleteFor more ammo capacity, there are also methods to join 2 clips together to form 12-dart clips, commonly referred to as "Super Clips".

I really don't know why people make such a big deal about inverse plungers. They go just as far as longshot ones and are quieter! the only reason why its worse is because when modded, the range falls short of a modded longshot.

Stronger aftermarket springs can be sourced from spring manufacturers or stores. If you are in SG, check the NerfSG forum as there are modders selling suitable-sized aftermarket springs in the trading section.
Note that if you install a stronger aftermarket spring but don't remove the Air Restrictor (AR), the performance increase will be very much reduced, because the intact AR is still restricting the air flow.
Hey, if I only remove the air restrictor on the recon, will it make a difference In distance? I wanted to get one, but not mod it too much, just make it shoot further.

ReplyDeleteIf you are looking for a blaster for close quarter games, both the Maverick and Recon are good choices. Both have similiar stock ranges too (differing only by a few ft).
Go for the Maverick if you prefer something compact and easy to handle.
Get the Recon if you like something that is modular and uses the N-strike clip system for faster reloads.

ReplyDeleteFor the Maverick, as it has a smaller reverse plunger system and air gap between the rotating barrels and plunger, power improvements from modifications would naturally be less significant, but they can still be done.
You could add a stronger spring and remove the air restrictors from the rotating barrel cartridge (note that the noise from firing will be much louder). Those mods should increase the range by another 5-10ft.
Another mod that Maverick users commonly do is the "roulette" mod whereby the entire barrel can be flipped out (instead of just half-way).

I'm pretty alright with the CS-6 as it is. However, for giggles, I use the CS-18's 20-round mag rather than the 6-round the Recon comes with then slide a Crossfire onto the long barrel. It's a wicked little deterrent for my assault-minded opponents.
ReplyDeleteWell, I've seen a Recon do it's work. Frankly, I think it isn't really good. Well, if you play in a very narrow place, then the recon is the best. And, I recommend that you guys don't use the barrel. Without the barrel, it could shoot further. It's because the dart flies up into the air, and then,it slams onto the tip of the barrel, then it'll go tumbling down. Either that Recon was faulty, or it's performance will be like that after a while.

ReplyDeleteIf you plan to attach velcro onto the tips of streamline darts, use the velcro "hook" side... so that they can stick onto Nerf dart tag vests which are made with the velcro "loop" side.
Mavericks can fire all the current Nerf darts, the only thing to watch out for is that you may need to shorten some foam darts (like Tagger darts) for better fit in the rotating barrel.

The front barrel attachments usually reduce the range of any blasters they are attached to due to the extra friction and obstruction to the foam darts when they are fired.
Would it be able to reduce the friction by cellotape on the darts or something like baby powder inside the barrel?

ReplyDeleteYou can try, but it still does not prevent the foam darts from bumping against the walls of the barrel and slowing down.
Don't use baby power or any such stuff in your blaster, it will gunk up the o-ring seals and decrease the performance further.
The only barrels that increase power and range are those that are part of air-tight breech systems, like this:

ReplyDeleteThe Nerf bandolier strap is basically like a rifle sling (with ammo and clip slots) to hook onto a blaster, so you could also do the same on a Recon, just customize how you prefer to attach it.
Not sure how you could hook up another Maverick though, i guess perhaps with a quick-release carabina hook?
The Nerf tactical vest costs abit more, but it has good features too. There is already an inbuilt holster for your Maverick, with another zip pouch for another small blaster, along with ammo and clip straps too.
In addition, it comes with the clear clips, which are very useful when checking ammo count at a quick glance.
Imho, both the bandolier strap and tactical vest are designed to work together so it'll be good if you can get both for the best combination. :)
but can i use the longstrike's barrel for the recon to hook to the strap. but can i hook the maverick by the hole at the back of the pullback thingy?

You can also hook the Maverick by its charging handle loop.
Imho, just try different combinations on your own, its up to you how you want to customise your setup.
Hey, can you get the Recon to reach ranges of maybe 30 - 40 metres approx 90 - 120 feet, if so can you make a tut. we can use Nerf rifles at the SQN for field exercises but we cant get them (the rifles) to go past 10-15 metres (approx 30 ish feet)

So far, with the various mods and stronger aftermarket springs, i have only managed to get them to achieve 50-60ft ranges.

Even with the more advanced brass breech mods that i have done on a few Recons, i could only improve their performance abit more to achieve 60-70ft ranges.
Unless they are fired at an angle to get more range, modded Recons have alot of natural limitations to range increases.
But thats the expected limitations of a compact blaster with smaller internal plunger components. After all, a Recon is basically a pistol sized blaster with add-on attachments.
If you want a blaster that can be modded to achieve 90-120ft, then the Longshot is what you should be using. It has a direct plunger system that has almost 4 times larger air volume with minimal plunger deadspace.
With a combination of strong aftermarket springs, well designed brass breeches and custom calibrated foam darts, highly modded Longshots can achieve 100+ ft ranges.

recon if you are looking for options and more power. But the accuracy is better on the deploy plus it is lighter. Manuverability depends on how you use the recon if it is used as a pistol it has more manuverability but add the stock or barrel and manuverabilith goes to the deploy. I hoped this information helped

There is an easy mod that I figured out just take it apart and take the part that the barrel connects to and you can shoot any type of bullet.

Semi-automatic is when the blaster can continuously fire a shot with every trigger pull without needing to be primed in between.

ReplyDeleteIts normal for the blaster range to be lower with the front barrel and higher without the front barrel.
This is because the front barrel attachment tends to hinder the flight of the foam dart once it is fired from the blaster... in most aspects, the front barrel attachment is designed more for looks than actual effectiveness.

The Recon red-dot targeter and light can be attached to the Deploy's tactical rail situated on its carrying handle.

ReplyDeleteYes, without the front barrel attachment and shoulder stock, the Recon becomes a more compact pistol-sized blaster. Thats one its its useful features.
The Deploy's main feature is its "deploy" function. Unless you plan to be using that function often, the rest of the blasters is pretty much similiar to a Recon (other than its pump action grip which some users find easier to operate).
The Deploy's trigger handle is okay to use, but being a component that can be articulated, its still less sturdy than the fixed trigger handle on a Recon.

I just bought one of these today and i opened it up to have a look and I CANT PUT IT BACK TOGETHER! The Thing that loads it wont go back the whole way.

ReplyDeleteThe Nerf Recon is a clip-fed blaster, this means that if you can buy a few extra clips to use, you can pre-load all of them with foam darts before a game.
When you are firing the Recon, once your clip is empty, you can just take it out and slot in another full clip and continue firing, no need to waste time manually loading in individual darts in the middle of Nerf games.

The Recon would be a better buy as there are more features and more options for parts compatibility amongst the other blasters in the Nerf range.

ReplyDeleteWhen used properly with foam darts that are in good condition, the N-Strike clip-fed blasters should not jam.
Bent or damaged foam darts will cause higher chances of jams occurring, they are wear and tear items, so it's always better to use fresh new foam darts.

ReplyDeleteWell, its quite common for enthusiasts to re-paint their Nerf blasters, just make sure the various moving parts are not restricted by a layer of paint.
In addition, if you paint it with colours that make it look like real firearms, do not bring it out to public to play as that is against the law in most countries (including Singapore).
Can you put the front part of the Longshot so u can have like a noob tube for it?

I love how on the boxart the clip isn't all the way in and it's not falling out and still firing darts.

It's quite a popular blaster amongst nerfers, one of the reasons is because of its modular configuration and if you use just the main pistol unit (no shoulder stock or front barrel), it's the most compact N-Strike clip-fed blaster so far.

Just got a Recon for my son for Christmas, and a Deploy for myself so we can pick up ammo as we shoot each other, and the Recon seems to be much more fun (but that's fine since the kid has it - although in retrospect maybe two Recons would have been better - hopefully a Whiteout version will appear soon). A quick question - when storing the ammo clips, should we empty them first to avoid bending the springs, or can we store them all loaded for easy play start? I have a habit of removing tension from all toys during storage, but when we have 4 clips (soon to be 6) it will probably save some time if we can pre-load them. Thanks!

As for the clips, its better to completely unload them for storage as leaving the foam darts loaded tend to weaken the clip springs over time.

DeleteAll these blasters have around similar ranges... so its just their features that differentiate them.
Get a Raider or Alpha Trooper 'cos they have the slam-fire mode for higher rate-of-fire.
The Raider has an advantage of being packaged with a larger 35-dart drum mag (compared to the smaller 18-dart drum mag on the Alpha Trooper).
Just some rough measurements, the Recon is approx. 30cm in length (just the main unit itself), or approx. 50 cm in length (with just the front barrel attachment), or approx. 80 length (with the front barrel + shoulder stock) and approx. 18cm in height from top to trigger handle.
Alpha Trooper is approx. 50cm in length and also approx. 18cm in height (it doesn't come with add-on barrel or shoulder stock accessories). The Raider is also similar dimensions.

Anyways, the modded foam dart blasters i use far exceed the ranges of even modded vortex blasters too. :)

DeleteWith most stock Nerf blasters limited to similar 25-30ft ranges, full-auto or semi-auto blasters are always better than manual single-shot blasters.
In your case, you should just get the Nerf Stampede... it is full-auto, clip-fed, and if modded, will get much faster rate-of-fire due to its motorized firing system and more range due to its larger direct plunger system (compared to the manual primed smaller reverse plunger system in blasters like the Longstrike, Recon, Raider etc).
And if I want a good-ranged, accurate sniper that takes minimal time to cock, which one should I go with, the longstrike or the longshot? Sorry for another question, I am just curious. Thanks!

Btw, accuracy depends on the foam darts used, most players use custom made and calibrated foam darts to get higher accuracy and consistency (especially in modded blasters).
I don't think I will mod my blasters, but I think I will modify my darts. Which is the best way to do that and whether it will work with stock guns or not?

For stock blasters, just keep the foam darts at the standard length and use lighter weight tips (due to the lower power of stock blasters), you'll have to test and see which combinations work well.

DeleteWell, the Recon's shoulder stock is abit flexible (some modders reinforce it with metal bars or brackets)... but it should not be too tilted when installed, maybe you could check at the store and compare it with another unit to see if its any different.

Rate-of-fire is around the same too... both need to be manually primed and fired.
But when modded (ie. air restrictors removed, optimized seals, stronger springs etc), the Longshot will achieve much longer ranges because it uses a larger direct plunger system... compared to the small reverse plunger system in the Recon.

DeleteCould be the plunger seal somehow deteriorated or there is a leak somewhere, i guess you'll have to open it up to check.
Alternatively, it could have also been a faulty component that failed. If possible, just exchange it at the store for a new working unit (since you've only had it for a week), save the hassle.
Ok I will open the casing oh and by the way no springs are going to fly at my face when a take a look at the plunger are they? Cos I'm quite new to modding etc.

Just in case, you could also take photos of the internal layout for future reference when you are putting it back together.

I have trouble removing the barrel extension from the main blaster unit. I tried twisting it 90 degrees but it would not budge. Any suggestions?

DeleteMost likely the particular unit you got has a production variation in that attachment part (sometimes that happens in certain sets).
I guess you'll just have to use more strength to twist and detach the barrel extension.
Alternatively, you could sand the attachment point areas slightly with sand paper to make the fit less tight.
How can I use my own custom stefans in the Nerf Recon CS-6 Clear series?The stefans just drop from my barrel.... I make it by using a hot glue gun and a FBR with 1/2 inch diameter.... I make it according to videos from youtube....

DeleteIf you are referring to short length stefans, those are designed for sealed breech or barrel systems (ie. brass breech)... they do not work well in normal stock breeches.
If stefans are used in normal breech systems like in the stock breech design of Nerf blasters, the performance will actually be worse, this is because the stock breech system of blasters require a longer length of the foam to be chambered backwards into the bolt to create enough dart seal inside the bolt (which in all aspects is the actual barrel for stock breech systems).
When stefans are used in such stock breech systems, they only get chambered backwards into the bolt abit (because they are shorter) so the dart seal will be very weak, hence the poor performance.
So you need to have a sealed breech system for stefans to work optimally.

DeleteIf it is modded with ARs removed, then you should install plunger padding to help absorb the impact (if you have not already done it).
Otherwise, the other method is to install sound absorption foam or padding in the empty spaces within the casing to dampen the sounds.
Both the clear and yellow versions have the same internals layout, the only difference is the casing color.
I put a power stock in my Recon, and it every time i shoot, it bangs, similar to a gun with no air restrictors. Is that normal, or did something happen to the bolt?

DeleteIf your blaster's ARs are still intact, then probably there could be some leak or loose seals. If you are using particularly strong springs, then maybe there could be a possibility that it could have also increased the impact force to a loud cracking sound.

DeleteThe Gear Up Series blasters were a limited edition series released back in 2011, once sold out they were not re-stocked anymore.
I guess you'll have to check eBay or Nerf forums to find sellers who have spare or 2nd hand sets for sale.

DeleteMost stores should be clearing them as they are old stock, so it might be sold out at some places already.
You'll have to shop around the various stores to find them on your own, i have no idea which stores still have stock since its an old model.
Note that Elite series blasters like the Retaliator achieve longer ranges and have a nicer blue color scheme, they are designed to supersede the older yellow N-Strike blasters which are currently being phased out.
Btw, why are you getting the old Recon model? Might as well just get the new Retaliator instead since its newer, has much higher performance and looks better too.
